For the last few years the Dallas Cowboys have had one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. The stars on the team have consisted of veterans Tony Romo, Jason Witten, and Miles Austin. Of course they have many others that some may not consider veterans or haven’t reached their full potential yet. Key names in that category would be Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray. These five players are hands down the stars of the offense.
What a lot of people don’t realize is that Dez Bryant is the only first round pick of the offensive play makers. The next players to look at would be Jason Witten and DeMarco Murray; both were drafted in the third round. Then there’s Miles Austin and Tony Romo. Over the last three years or so Austin and Romo have become one of the best duos in the NFL, and neither of their names was called on draft day. In the history of the NFL there has never been an undrafted force like Romo and Austin.
In the last decade the majority of playoff caliber quarterbacks have been drafted in the first round. They include Eli and Peyton Manning, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez, Matt Ryan, Mathew Stafford, Ben Roethlisberger, Michael Vick, Aaron Rodgers, and even Alex Smith. Not far behind, Brees was a second round pick and Tom Brady was selected in the sixth. Kurt Warner and Tony Romo are the only ones undrafted. This little stat proves the importance of the draft.
This offseason the Dallas Cowboys have more than 20 undrafted rookies on the roster. Since the Cowboys staff is no stranger undrafted talent, you can’t help wonder which one of these guys really stands out to them. Could the next player be a Tight End such as Andrew Szczerba or George Bryan? Maybe the next undrafted star could be a Running Back like Lance Dunbar or Jamize Olawale? Perhaps it could be another Wide Receiver like Tim Benford or my personal favorite Cole Beasley.
Bottom line is we won’t know until the beginning of the season, if we are lucky. If the hidden talent does exist on the team then it seems that the Cowboys are good at finding it and with the cap casualties we are facing now and over the next few seasons it wouldn’t hurt to find some more talent in the bargain bin.
