With OTA’s in full swing a lot of fans are excited about the prospect for the 2012 season. A lot of fans are more excited than they have been in a very long time and starting to whisper the words, Super Bowl champions, but, willDallasbe a legit contender in 2012?
This writer doesn’t think so.
Now before you start sending the hate mail just remember we, as fans, have to look at this upcoming season with bated breath because well 17 years is a very long time and it’s been a roller coaster ride the entire time, however much we all want it to be, 2012 won’t be that break out season and here is why.
Dallas still lacks depth at certain key positions: the center, the tight end and guards.
The center position is still one that Dallas needs to work on. Phil Costa and Kevin Kowalski are not the answers. Not one fan I’ve encountered wants to sit and cringe at the television or during a game as a ball sails over Tony Romo’s head during a key drive.
The tight end depth is still a little shaky. John Phillips hasn’t been the same since he came back from his torn ACL.
Guards are a must have because if that offensive line goes down, there the quarterback is running for his life once more.
Besides the depth at key positions there is still the red zone scoring that needs to get better (last year we were 49% scoring in the red zone and ranked 20th overall*) and the penalty situation to stop killing drives. Player chemistry is going to play an important role as well. With so many new faces on the defense it may be a few weeks or growing pains, then again maybe not.
This writer is still convinced we are not more than a 9-7 or 10-6 team this upcoming year at most. BUT I will be glad to eat my words if this team proves otherwise.
