An interesting story was released online this week concerning the Dallas Cowboys. Cable programming giant HBO released an important statement that they would like to solidify a team for this year’s popular sports documentary program HBO Hard Knocks by June 1st of 2012. For those of you who have never watched the show, Hard Knocks is an entertaining in depth show detailing players, coaches, and team activities during an NFL teams training camp preparation for upcoming season.
Although, I am usually against it, I feel this year the Cowboys would be the perfect choice for this year’s Hard Knocks reality program mainly because the Cowboys were the 2nd team ever to appear on the hit HBO show back in 2002, exactly one decade ago. It would be both fun and entertaining to look back at how many changes the Cowboys have gone through over the past ten years.
HBO could begin with a tour of the best stadium in the NFL, The Jerry Dome built in 2009, seven years after the Cowboys appearance. From there we could do an in depth piece on Cowboys star QB Tony Romo (who was not even drafted until after the 2002 season) along with the new Dallas Triplets, DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant. We could see colorful defensive coordinator Rob Ryan screaming at the defense as he implements his complex 3-4 scheme, and follow the first day of Camp of future Star rookie CB Morris Claiborne, along with less known rookies James Hanna, Robert Leary, and Saalim Hakim. We could also take a look at the best linebacker in the NFL since Lawrence Taylor, DeMarcus Ware and detail how Ware is a true role model and is the complete opposite of Taylor off the field and will eventually be viewed as even better then LT on it.
Many other NFL teams such as the Jets, Broncos, Redskins, Texans, Seahawks, Raiders, and 49ers have already passed on the HBO series, stating it as a unwanted distraction, but in Dallas this show and public following could be just what the doctor ordered to build this young Cowboy teams confidence following two very disappointing seasons. I say if HBO is knocking, Jerry should answer the door, and allow America to view its favorite team weekly, it will not only make great TV, but may give our Cowboys back some much needed publicity and swagger that has been missing in Dallas since well before the 2002 season.
UPDATE: HBO ultimately chose the Miami Dolphins to be featured on Hard Knocks this upcoming season.
