CONCLUSION

The dreaded closing of the ‘window’ that Jason Witten and the Cowboys star veterans now speak of in urgent terms, just isn’t quite as daunting for the team as it once was.  It’s understood Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten, and Jay Ratliff all in unison have been the heart pumping the blood of this Cowboys team since 2006.

They should continue to excel in 2012 and in the near future until reaching the dreaded, unavoidable erosion of skills.  Yet with the right foresight, planning, and execution, Cowboys management has every opportunity to make the transition from these stars much less painful than was to be expected in prior years.

The main reason is the elite group facing replacement is much smaller now. Effectively replacing four elite players within a 3 to 4 year period is not an insurmountable task if the process of locating and developing their eventual successors begins immediately.

The collection of talented, young players in Dallas currently surrounding the star veterans is showing promise to quickly exceed the performance of the surrounding cast in the years before them.  The level of play as a TEAM could actually increase following the transition from these superstars facing their fourth quarter years.

It all depends on the Cowboys realizing it takes time to find adequate replacements for integral players or develop alternate strategy methods to compensate.  Regardless of how it’s eventually executed, the process to address these matters must begin following the 2012 season so to avoid the panic button in the future.  If done properly over time, the redesigned ‘window’ for success will produce a panoramic view, with shiny new panes of glass to gaze through even during inclimate weather.
