Round 2:

The Prospects:

Ronnell Lewis, LB, OU

Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Kendall Reyes, DE, UCONN

Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin

Josh Robinson, CB, Central Florida

The Analysis:

Ronnell Lewis- Nicknamed “The Hammer” for his punishing hits; Ronnell Lewis is a vastly underrated LB prospect.  He was asked to leave OU for the draft because coaches weren’t sure he could maintain academic eligibility.  Don’t let his academic status fool you though; this guy is a good, smart football player with great instincts.  He’s involved in every play; can play the run effectively and rush the passer.

Janoris Jenkins- With first round ability Jenkins is falling victim of a haunting past.  He’s easily a top CB in this draft but scouts are just unsure about taking him so early.  There caution becomes the Cowboys gold, as they likely would have looked at him in the first round.  Jenkins seems to have gotten over his past and would be a steal for the Cowboys here.

Kendall Reyes- Another first round prospect, Reyes is a player I really like for the ‘Boys.  Reyes can play anywhere on the line and is able to contribute as a pass rusher.  I think Reyes is a great consolation prize for choosing Barron in the first over some of the other prospects.

Kevin Zeitler- Often linked to the Cowboys in the second round, Zeitler is a really solid guard prospect.  Good foot movement and strength but needs to work on fluidity.  I’m not sure the Cowboys look here with their other needs and offseason signings.

Josh Robinson- Robinson is a great cover corner with smooth hips and feet.  He also possesses exceptional speed and projects as a good return man.   The biggest knock on Robinson is his size but he is a highly competitive player.  The Cowboys might like his all around ability and work ethic.

The Pick:

With the 45th Pick of the NFL draft the Cowboys select… Kendall Reyes, DE, UCONN

Reyes just makes sense here with his size and ability.  Not only is Reyes a dominant football player he is also a phenomenal person off the field.  He is exactly the player the Cowboys want to have leading their DL into the future.  This is an explosive athlete who’s a force in the run game and as a pass rusher.

I know some are upset about Janoris Jenkins isn’t the choice with such value, but the Cowboys are just not willing to take on many risks.  This is an important draft for the Cowboys and no risks are worth taking.  As for Zeitler and Lewis, good player who just didn’t fit exactly what the Cowboys want.  Spencer may well still be a player for a long time with the Cowboys and if not next year they’ll replace him with a first round prospect.
