Who Should Stay/Who Should Go? Anthony Spencer

In this week’s addition of Who Should Stay/Who Should Go I will be talking about Anthony Spencer and whether or not the Dallas Cowboys should resign the free agent. Spencer was drafted in the 1st round by the Cowboys in the 2007 NFL Draft. Now when you look at Spencer’s numbers they are not horrible but when you think about the fact that he is a first round pick you tend to expect more than the average numbers he has been putting up.

In the last 3 season Spencer has averaged 60 tackles and at least 5 sacks, this is not bad but once again average. With the way the defense finished up the season this year the Cowboys need to be better than average and that might mean parting ways with the former 1st round pick. However 1 stat that is has been consistent for the Cowboys is that in his 5 seasons he has only played less than 16 games once. He is a guy that you can count on to be out there every Sunday and that hasn’t been something the Cowboys can always count on from their other guys.

However as one of my followers writers at The Landry Hat C. Joseph Wright pointed out, Spencer may be average but he isn’t terrible in fact he has been someone the Cowboys can count on. He pointed out that at the OLB position only 3 guys in the league had more sacks than Spencer and no one had more tackles at the OLB than Spencer. So after looking at that you could say that Spencer is a little better than average and the Cowboys should resign him because you may not find many in the league that is better than him.

So should he be brought back or let go? I believe that he should be brought back because although he has not had the greatest numbers he has been a consistent player that the Cowboys could count on for 5 seasons. I think the reason why Spencer gets a bad rap is because he was a 1st round pick and he is compared to another 1st round pick in DeMarcus Ware. Spencer has not had a great break out season that makes him a house hold name and I don’t think he ever will, but he is a solid piece and a veteran that I believe the Cowboys should looking into bringing back, unless they can find someone who is defiantly better. I don’t see anyone being head and shoulders better than Spencer being available so I think the Boys should do the smart thing and bring him back.

What do you the readers think? Should Anthony Spencer Stay or Go?
