He was a beast on the field, and a beast in the game.

Our Original Cowboy Video Game MVP: Tecmo Bowl's Herschel Walker

This is the video game your grandpa played.

With the release of Madden 12 this week, I thought it would be appropriate to honor one of the greatest Dallas Cowboy players ever to be depicted in a video game, Herschel Walker.

In 1989, the arcade hit Tecmo Bowl was ported over to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It instantly became a hit as it was only the second game ever to use real NFL player’s names.

Unfortunately, Tecmo was unable to use the actual team names, but they did include the cities. The twelve most popular teams made it into the game. Those teams were: Indianapolis, Minnesota, Miami, San Francisco, Cleveland, Denver, Washington, Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and, of course, Dallas.

Unlike today’s games, Tecmo Bowl only featured four plays to choose from. They were all offensive plays, two running and two passing plays. (expect for Miami and San Francisco, which had three passing plays and only one running play) On defense, the player would have to choose the offensive play they predicted their opponent would pick. If you’re choices matched, the defense would preform a massive all-out blitz.

This game was known for it’s great running backs. Names like Bo Jackson, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, and Herschel Walker. Find out more about Walker and the Dallas Cowboy’s roster, after the break.

Herschel Walker was the best Cowboy player in the game. He literally carried the entire load for the team which featured a pre-Triplets roster.

For old times sake, let’s take a look at the Cowboy’s roster:

QB DANNY WHITE
RB HERSCHEL WALKER
WR MIKE RENFRO
WR KELVIN EDWARDS
TE DOUG COSBIE
LG NATE NEWTON
C TOM RAFFERTY
RG CRAWFORD KER
RT KEVIN GOGAN
KR ROBERT LAVETTE
K ROGER RUZEK
P MIKE SAXON
RE JIM JEFFCOAT
LB E. LOCKHART
LE ED JONES
LB JEFF ROHRER
RT RANDY WHITE
LT KEVIN BROOKS
LB MIKE HEGMAN
CB RON FRANCIS
FS MICHAEL DOWNS

Despite Walker being the highest rated player on the team, he was still only the 4th highest ranked running back in the game. (The top three were listed above) But if you were a true Cowboy fan, you ran with the team anyway. That meant that Walker was your rock. He was your most lethal offensive weapon and you defied defenses to stop you.

So today, we salute you, Herschel Walker. Thank you for being worth so much to the Vikings, that you were invovled in the greatest trade in NFL history. Thank you for being indirectly responsible for our three Superbowl wins in the 90’s. But more importantly, thank you for being our first video game MVP!
