Yesterday in our comments section, Chi City Sports shared a petition that they thought might interest The Landry Hat. They thought wrong. While I applaud the creativity of Chi City Sports, and totally support the ultimate cause, the petition’s subject matter is something that we here at TLH find to be repugnant. CCS’s goal is to convince Roy Williams to stop with his ridiculous celebrations after trivial plays. They intend to raise money for whatever charity Roy would like if he promises to tone it down a notch. They’re having fun with an annoying display of poor sportsmanship and I can respect that. Of course, if Roy had just pillaged the Bears’ financial coffers, I doubt they would find his little dances quite so bemusing.
I’m certainly on board with any philanthropic endeavor. However, this particular effort only reminded me why I loathe Roy Williams. To be perfectly honest, I don’t wish the man any success in Chicago. To acquire Williams, the Cowboys gave up several key draft picks and paid out a ton of guaranteed money. In return, Williams gave them three seasons of pitiful performances and complete obliviousness. Next year, the ‘Boys will be in salary cap hell in large part because of the dead weight of Roy’s contract. He was an absolute disaster, setting the franchise back years potentially. And now he has the nerve to sit in Bears’ training camp pointing the finger at the Cowboys for his bed crapping performance while with the team.
We shouldn’t have to ask Roy Williams to refrain from giving over the top celebrations after small, meaningless feats. He should just know better. Of course, there is a lot that Roy should know — e.g. how to catch, how to finish a route, how to not quit on plays, how to keep his mouth shut when he isn’t earning his keep — but Roy is clueless and doesn’t have time for the subtle nuances of football, or life for that matter. (By the way, the only time it’s appropriate to propose marriage through the mail is in a mail order bride situation and even then it’s a pretty questionable move for reasons that should be apparent.)
Obviously, Chi City Sports is on the right track with the charity portion of their movement. That part I like. However, maybe Roy should just stop being an idiot, and, instead of raising money on account of him, everyone can raise money because it’s a worthy cause. Then we can petition Roy to donate a significant portion of the money he received from Jerry. Considering Williams’ performance, Jerry was basically giving to charity already. Why not just allocate that to a more deserving cause? We can call it the Roy Williams Accountability Petition.
In all seriousness, I respect what they are doing here. It’s a fun and creative way to raise money for charity and getting Roy to stop the 3rd and 1 insanity is for the betterment of football. If you’re interested in donating, the link has all the info.
