Bennett Backs Kitna

Once the lockout ends and football starts up again at least one member of the Cowboys believes 3 time Pro Bowler Tony Romo should have to earn his spot back. Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett has said that he wants to see back up Jon Kitna get a chance to win the job. The Cowboys struggled last season with Romo under center only going 1-5, his season ended against the Giants when he broke his collarbone.  However when Kitna took over the Cowboys won 4 of the next 9 including a stretch of three out of four after Jason Garrett took over.

Bennett isn’t the first Cowboy to suggest this as Roy Williams said after Romo’s injury last season that Kitna was “just as good” as Romo, a point he reiterated on many occasions. Romo has been 39-22 as a starter for the Cowboys and only Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers and Hall of Famer Steve Young have better quarterback ratings than Romo’s 95.5.

The Cowboys have made it clear that they are sticking with Romo, he still has three years remaining on his six year contract.  Kitna however has embraced his role as Romo’s backup and will go into camp as the backup again this season. Kitna has started for the Seahawks, Lions and Bengals during his NFL career.

I was very impressed with the way Kitna played last season and he was one of the lone bright spots for the Boys last season. However I still believe that Romo gives us the best chance to win and make the playoff’s. I myself see Stephen McGee as being a better and more likely backup to Romo than Kitna, Kitna is getting old and we need someone who can take over for Romo and I believe McGee is that Guy. What do you all think? Should their be an open quarterback competition? Should Kitna even be the backup next season?
