Cowboys To Target Michael Huff?

Once the lockout ends the Cowboys might be looking at signing free agent Michael Huff. According to Bill Williamson an NFC East blogger for ESPN, the Cowboys could be interested in signing the free agent safety. Huff is from the Dallas area and played at the University of Texas. Huff  also played for new Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan early in his career.

Huff recently acknowledged the thought of going to the Cowboys while at Texas pro day. “That’s home, but you never know what’s going to happen,” Huff said. “I’ve got to want to go there, but they’ve got to want me. There are a bunch of things that go into the process”.

Huff who made strides in 2010 said he wanted to play with a winner and the Oakland Raiders who finished 8-8 last season might be headed in that direction. “[Winning is] the only thing,” Huff said. ” Being here [at Texas], you get spoiled . You win all the time here and then you go there and have some tough years.Getting that Super Bowl ring is something they can never take away from you, like they can’t take away the national championship ring. That’s the next step, and I look forward to it”.

Huff could always return to Oakland, but it sounds like he is at least interested in testing the market. So would Huff be a good fit in Dallas? Should the Cowboys take a good hard look at him?

I know this is a blog, and I realize that you acknowledged that Williamson ESPN in your introduction, but this article is damn close to plagarism. Leaving that aside, since when does copying and pasting 90% of someone else's article and then tacking an opinion end at the end of their article constitute journalism or blogging?

I'm hopin that we'll first see if weddle will slip through san diego's hands and then look to huff and be able to move ball back to the 4th corner and not stress so much about having to draft a corner and make it a luxery

Yes, Weddle would be my first choice at free safety, followed by Huff. If Dallas needs to keep Ball as their 4th cornerback, then so be it. But I hope they don't have to. The Cowboy's problem, as I see it, is they have too many players who will never be a starter at any position. They need to constantly turn over the bottom half of their roster to find the players who can contend for a starting position in 2 or 3 years. In order to do this, they need to start having better drafts. But with JJ as the GM, good luck with that.

A BIT unfair JJ. The drafts gave been much improved starting with the year before Parcells arrived. 2009 looks awful, but end haven't been nearly as bad as you suggest. Maybe he can consider players who will be both a leader & harmonious in the locker room, but that is easier said than done.

I hope the Cowboys sign him to an incentive laden contract. He will be better than any of the free safeties that they could draft this year and will bring some experience and leadership in the secondary. Alan Ball has got to go.

You act like it's Ball's fault he couldn't play safety. He was a solid 4th corner. It's a coaches job to put players into a position to suceed. It would have been nice if Ball was able to be the free safety we needed, but he obviously didn't have the skills.

Huff would be a decent stop gap. Personally I'd like to see newman start taking some practice reps at free safety and in a year or two make a full time transition. The problem with that is he's not a great tackler, he's injury prone, and he'd be incredibly over paid. But out side of those concerns...

I'm still not sure how the entire defense took a step back wards last year, but there are a few reasons to be optimistic.

Does it really matter who's fault it was? The fact remains that Ball could not do the job that he was asked to do last year. Newman at free safety would not work because he, as you say, is not a good tackler. The only good solution at free safety would be a free agent like Huff or Weddle.
