A Look At The Dallas Cowboys Draft Needs W/ Comments By Jerry Jones

Everyone seems to know that the Dallas Cowboys main focus in the upcoming draft include offensive line, secondary, defensive line and pass rush. Included in “everyone” is Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones. Jones talked to reporters at the scouting combine and commented on a few positions of need. [Tip of the hat to ESPN Dallas for the Jerry Jones quotes.]

Jerry Jones comment: “The offensive line is an area because of the multiple players that are required to operate there, that’s an area that’s pretty obvious.”

Jerry Jones comment: “Safety would be an area. We got some numbers there and some potential there but certainly you could look at that.”

Jerry Jones comment: “You should always be looking at your pressure position.”

If you look at those three positions of need and Jerry’s comments, it is safe to assume that the team’s draft strategy will heavily revolve around the positions. So what are the Cowboys options?

At offensive line, USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith is quickly rising and could be in play for the 9th overall pick. If Dallas opts to wait until the second or third round to address offensive line issues, look for guys like Derek Sherrod of Mississippi State, Pitt’s Jason Pinkston, Danny Watkins of Baylor and Villanova’s Benjamin Ijalana as options.

As far as defensive line and pass rusher are concerned, Dallas can get the most value out of that position with the 9th pick. JJ Watt, Cam Jordan and Robert Quinn can all be available. Any of those players could severely improve the defensive front seven.

An option that I strongly favor is taking Brooks Reed of Arizona in the second round. Reed plays a very similar style of football as Green Bay Packers stud Clay Matthews.

At secondary, Rahim Moore is the top rated safety, but could be considered a reach at pick 9. Oklahoma’s Quinton Carter, Clemson’s DeAndre McDaniel and Florida’s Ahmad Black could all be options in the 2nd or 3rd round range at safety. Nebraska star Prince Amukamara could be an option with pick 9, but he is expected to impress at the combine and could be gone by the time Dallas is on the clock.

Dallas has many options at positions of need and has a great chance to pick up plenty of potential stars. Let’s just hope they don’t screw up this opportunity.
