ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. released his first mock draft for 2011 yesterday, and Cowboys fans should like what they see. Kiper has Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara sliding to number 9 where Dallas can scoop him up. Amukamara has been a favorite among Cowboys fans and many believe that corner is the direction to go in this draft.
A great value here, Amukamara is the best pure ball-hawking corner in the draft. A technician with outstanding instincts, ball skills and anticipation, he immediately provides an upgrade in the Dallas secondary. The Cowboys need help at corner, and this spot is still a tad too early to go with offensive line help based on current grades, so this makes sense. Amukamara is the kind of player that can help the pass rush and also make quick decisions turn into interceptions.
An ideal situation for Dallas would be landing Amukamara or Patrick Peterson of LSU. These are the two names that have been generating the most buzz as potential targets for the Cowboys — and for good reason. Picking up a top corner would help the Cowboys struggling secondary and allow them to free up some cap space by cutting ties with veteran corner Terrence Newman.
