The top characteristic that many people believe Jerry Jones is looking for in the next head coach is someone who he can make his puppet. We all know that Jerry likes to be in control and that is one reason it seems Jason Garrett is the perfect fit as the next Cowboys coach. Jones personality and lack of willingness to give up control scares off some of the bigger name coaching candidates, so a guy like Garrett is just what the owner ordered.
Garrett, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to think that the owner is as controlling as the general public. In fact, Garrett says he enjoys working with Jerry and used a word to describe Mr. Jones that I never thought I would hear… receptive.
“My relationship with him is good and has been for a number of years,” Garrett said. “When you’re a player or a coach working for Jerry Jones, you understand his commitment to winning and what he wants to do each and every day to help you achieve that. That’s what you appreciate.
“He’s very receptive,” Garrett says. “He’s a great listener. He certainly has his opinions on things and he has convictions about things, but he wants to hear other people’s opinions as well.”
It seems that Garrett and Jones get along more than any of us imagined. The chemistry at the top of the organization can only help improve the team. If the coach and owner are truly working together to give the fans the best team possible, the result should show on the field.
I am excited for the Jason Garrett era. He did a solid job to close out this season and that was with a backup and third-string quarterback. With Tony Romo healthy and back under center, Garrett has an even better chance to succeed in Big D.
