Tashard Choice took advantage of starting running back Marion Barber’s injury that gave Choice an opportunity to get more touches against the Indianapolis Colts. As a result, Choice rushed for 100-yards and a touchdown while averaging an impressive 5.3 yards per carry. It was only the second 100-yard rushing game this season for a Cowboys tailback.
To compare, Barber averages 3.1 yards per carry on the season and averaged a pathetic 2.8 and 1.9 yards per carry against the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints respectively.
Choice proved that he is a valuable back. While he may have benefited from fresh legs and an awful Colts rush defense, Choice made an impact on interim head coach Jason Garrett.
When asked if Choice earned more carries with his performance on Sunday, Garret responded, “Absolutely. We want to get him the ball. We want to get him the ball. There’s no question about that.
“He has a very good feel, he has very good vision and he can find the softness in the defense,” Garrett said. “I think that was all on display yesterday.
“I think if you go back and look at Tashard, how he’s played when he’s gotten opportunities, he’s played fairly well. So seeing him make the runs, both inside and outside, that’s stuff that we’ve seen from him before. He’s a good football player. There’s no question about that.”
Many fans have been calling for Choice to get a shot all season due to Barber’s ineffectiveness. Now that Choice has shown once again what he is capable of, it will be interesting to see what happens with the running back rotation when Barber is healthy again. Barber is expected to miss one more week, so look for Choice to continue making his claim for more playing time.
