David Buehler Struggles Again… This Time In Practice
It is no secret that the Cowboys have a severe need at kicker. Jerry Jones has said on more than one occasion that he will not make an immediate change at kicker, but his patience — like that of the fans — has to be wearing thin. Buehler has missed two of his four field goal attempts this season and he has done his fair share to hurt the Cowboys chances in the first two games of the season. His performance did not get any better in Wednesday’s practice as he attempted five field goals between 23 yards and 40. [...]
Thank You AFC South
Despite the Dallas Cowboys making every boneheaded mistake possible… despite penalties at every level of the offense and defense… despite the Cowboys playing with less heart than the Lions, Rams, or Raiders… despite the injuries suffered… despite the erratic kicking game… despite the woes in the red zone… despite the turnovers… despite the questionable coaching they are only one game out of first place in the NFC East. With the Texans beating the Redskins in overtime and with the Colts pummeling the Giants, the Cowboys have a viable chance to right the ship and contend for the division title. In order for the Cowboys [...]
A Silver Lining for Next Week
This may be grasping at straws, but the Houston Texans went into overtime. Last year when there was a ton of discussion on the revision of the overtime rules, there was a little known statistic that came to light that teams who play in an overtime game have a 70% chance of loss the following week, regardless of the length of the overtime or whether the team won or lost. Having said that, 70% isn’t the exact number. I did a variety of Google searches, and it is no where to be found. However, I do recall that being an [...]
Revising Expectations
It’s a golf cliche’, but it seems appropriate. You can’t win the golf tournament on Thursday, but you can lose it. With the Dallas Cowboys starting 0-2, what does this mean for the remainder of the season? The most naive optimist in the world would say that 14-2 isn’t that bad, but it seems incredibly unrealistic considering how poorly the team has played in the past two games, and considering the teams remaining (Houston, Indianapolis, Minnesota, New Orleans, Green Bay, and five tough games against the NFC East). Many experts believed that the Cowboys would be a 10-6 or 11-5 [...]
What to Watch for (W2W4) v. Chicago
Mike Martz offense: In 2007 and 2008, the Mike Martz lead Lion offense dominated the Cowboys defense. If not for a miracle last minute win lead by Tony Romo, the Cowboys would have been 0-2 in those two outings against a decidedly inferior team. There are some dangerous weapons on Chicago’s offense that can exploit an overly aggressive defense. Martz also has historically exploited weak links against a defense; looking at the Cowboys defense, it appears that Alan Ball may get a substantial opportunity to prove Jerry Jones and Co. right that he was the right man for the job. Marc Colombo: [...]
The Degenerate Gambler: Week 2 Edition
After an uneventful week one, I’m back for more guessing. This week introduce the embarrassment factor. If a team plays like a bunch of little girls the week prior, they will undoubtedly play harder the following week. As it turns out, because they were beat so badly, the line tends to be inflated, so it is a win win which will hopefully become a win win win. First pick: 13.5 points is a huge number to cover in the NFL. You could be up 20 points only to have a last minute touchdown against a prevent defense turn the tide [...]
Week 1 for Dallas & Chicago: A Tale of Two Calls
It was the best of time, it was the worst of times… For both the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys, they played poorly against lessor talented teams. Both games came down to last-minute calls. One call deservedly went against the Cowboys, whereas the call that went in favor of the Bears left fans scratching their head. The Lions Calvin Johnson caught the ball, had two feet, one butt cheek, a thigh, and a knee or two on the ground before attempting to push himself up off the ground with the arm still holding the ball. The ball pops out [...]
Disconnect In Dallas
It started in 2007 when Jerry Jones hired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett before he went on to appoint Wade Phillips as the Cowboys head coach. We knew then that with Garrett in the wings Phillips would have to return the team to glory or else be replaced by the young offensive mind. Here we are three years later. Same team loaded with talent, but underachieving and lackluster coaching. Garrett was promoted to assistant head coach, but it is clear that the team has co-head coaches. This has caused a disconnect between the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. We’ve [...]
Questioning “Brain Dead Red’s” Playcalling
Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas discusses Jason Garrett’s playcalling and the debacle of a season opener.
Deion Sanders Places Blame For Sunday’s Loss
While the aftermath of the Cowboys loss is still looming, Deion “Primetime” Sanders let his opinion known on who should receive a majority of the blame for the Dallas loss. Many will blame head coach Wade Phillips or Alex Barron, but Primetime placed the blame on Jason “Brain Dead Red” Garrett in an interview with Ben & Skin. The play-calling throughout Sunday’s game was atrocious. A complete boneheaded move was made at the end of the first half, which resulted in the Redskins only touchdown of the night. You can’t blame Wade Phillips for the loss. The defense did almost [...]
