Is Losing Gerald Sensabaugh Worth a 2nd Round Pick?

By: Joe D.

According to early reports, their have been three to four teams who have contacted Gerald Sensabaugh in the early stages of free agency.  The Dallas Cowboys placed a 2nd round tender on Sensabaugh.  This means that the Cowboys can match any contract offer of another team, or if the Cowboys elected not to match, they would receive a second round draft pick from that team.

Similarly, last year it was Miles Austin who received a 2nd round tender and there was some serious interest displayed by the NY Jets.  My opinion at that time is that Austin was an unknown factor.  He had talent and speed but minimal production on the field.  When he was on the field he fumbled every other touch (rookie year on kickoff returns), and he was hampered with injuries.  Reports are that the Cowboys would have matched the Jets offer; in retrospect, this would have been an ideal situation.  Presumably, Austin would have had a similar year as last year and he would be locked up for another 3 or 4 years making a salary of a mid-level player (not a star player).

If I were the GM of the Cowboys in 2009, I would have packed Austin’s bags for him.  The fans would have acted in kind for me the following year.  I would have screamed from the Greyhound bus that he was all potential and never produced on the field.

This brings us to Sensabaugh.  Sensabaugh played well for the Dallas Cowboys in 2009.  He could cover tight ends and wide receivers, he was a competent tackler, and he wasn’t solely responsible for any one loss the way Roy Williams (safety) had been in the past.

Based on my “analysis” of the 2010 draft, I don’t like any of the safeties in the 2nd round, and there are too many questions regarding the safeties in the 1st round to warrant being taken in the 1st round.

To answer the question posed in the title, no, it is not worth a 2nd round pick in an incredibly talent laden draft if we lose Sensabaugh.  Don’t fall in love with the unknown. Don’t disregard the known simply because it is unspectacular.  It’s the same policy many of us use for our wives.

While we are wishing for things, I hope someone signs Spears. I love Spears and I think he is a very good DE for the 3-4 system, but I'd also wouldn't mind rolling the dice with a new DT in the 1st round.

I hope someone takes him and gives us a 2nd. Package it with a 1st or 2nd rounder and move up to take the player slightly out of reach if needed. Gives us options.

Flo has been 1 of the better LTs,but,I agree that his age is showing.I feel o-line's age was exposed in the Washington game.Barber was stopped 4-5 times on short yardage runs, that may have been a combo of Haynesworth (hate that guy)and bad play calling, but the Minn. game was an embarassment.Letting Sensabaugh go would be a huge mistake, even with a broken thumb he was a big improvement over Williams. If we lose anybody it should be Hamlin and Roy Williams...

Earl Thomas plus Sharper that's sounds like a dream but that would be awesome.

I feel the Cowboys are more concerned about Flo's heath than his play..but LT are hard to find..You just don't go get one off the street..Next to QB it is the most valuable position on the offense..

Sensabaugh..I think the Cowboys like the guy but don't feel anyone will give up a second..They probably won't match if someone does..They could use their number one an d the two and get Earl Thomas..Plus sign Darren Sharper..

I say keep Flo, draft a LT in the first round or two and hope they build strength and technique and have Free play at RT.

I don't like Bruce Campbell, but there are other LT prospects that aren't widely heralded.

Kosier plays well, but I would drop him in a minute if we can get some solid play from any of the other young guys, specifically Brewster. In one year, we can have 3 new guys playing well on the o-line with 2 solid veterans at center and RG.

Who knows how it will play out, but if the players and the talent are there, that's how I would foresee it.

As for trading Flo, he is an older LT with a history of stupid penalties. Plus he is deaf in his right ear. It only takes one sucker, but I doubt he is worth anything above a 5th round pick to a passing team who just lost their starting LT for the season and they believe they are a contender for the Super Bowl.

And one quick point about the o-line play. There have been several games where Tony has been running for his life. It isn't specifically Flo's fault, but rather a strange confluence of events when all of the o-line has their worst game. I'm thinking of the playoff game against the Giants, the 2nd Philly game last year, and this year against the Vikings. Maybe it's an age thing, but when I rewind the game, it often looks like a jail break.

Yeah I know man just saying what was on the radio lol. He was a steal for us even if we get one year of him at that level.

Just curious what you all think. I'm not a Flo hater or anything I know he is one of the best at the position. Just wondering if the Cowboys think his age is catching up to him and that Free can maybe play solid at the position. Would it be a good idea for the Cowboys to try to trade him to see what teams might offer for him? I hope he can go another year but 35 is not a good age in a young mans game. Just wondering if we can benfit from a trade.

Tex,

Austin played at Monmouth. It's not a hotbed of NFL talent. When he was beating guys, they were only a few rungs more talented than decent high school players.

Also, he was 20 lbs. fatter when he was drafted. I think he ran something like a 4.6 40 time. After Austin broke out against the Chiefs, some radio guys were reading his pre-draft profile.

I love Miles, and I used to jump up and down when he would return kicks his rookie year, but 3rd round is a reach.

I doubt anyone would give up a 2nd round pick for him. If we do get a 2nd for a player we picked up off the street, that would be a small miracle. I like Jerry and Co.'s efforts in the draft recently, but I think a bird in the hand is always a better decision.

I get what your saying but maybe the Cowboys don't want to sign Sensabaugh to a contract and turn out he is another Hamlin. That and they could also be just getting a taste at what others teams will offer him so they don't pay too much. As for Austin I was hoping that he did not get taking from us by the Jets. You could tell he had some skills it just took time for him to learn to use them in the NFL. Austin was a big steal they talked about how he was really good at his high school and college that some how he flew under the radar. By the way he played in college he should have been a 3rd round pick. I don't know what Jerry is up too but he sure is driving people crazy by staying quiet in free agency. It's actually funny watching people panic.

If we lose him we get a pick and the ability to go sign someone else for the money the other team pays him right?

Those are the two things we get, but I don't know that makes it ok for what we lose. I liked the guy a lot.
