Boldin Traded for 3rd and 4th round picks – Cowboys Fans Shake Heads

By: Joe D.

Anquan Boldin, along with a 5th round pick, was traded Friday night to the Baltimore Ravens for 3rd and 4th round draft picks.  Boldin also signed a 4 year contract valued at $28 million with $10 million in guaranteed money.  In regards to salary, Boldin now earns nearly as much as the Cowboys’s highest paid WR, Roy Williams.

This trade is on the heels of the Braylon Edwards trade to the NY Jets for a conditional 3rd (could become a 2nd round pick) and a 5th round choice. WR Chansi Stuckey and LB Jason Trusnik were traded to Cleveland in the deal.

Cowboys fans are all aware that they overpaid for Roy Williams, giving up a 1st and a 3rd round pick (the Cowboys 6th round pick for the Lions 7th round pick are a wash).  There is no reason to continuing beating that horse, unless it is to upset a member of PETA.  The trade is only 8 years since the Cowboys traded 2 first round draft picks for Joey Galloway.  The question is, how can such a shrewd business man like Jerry Jones not understand the market value of a “star” wide receiver.

Jones has been a shrewd buyer and seller during the draft.  In 2004, the Cowboys traded out of the 1st round and acquired the Bills’s 2nd round pick and 2005 1st round pick.  In 2005, the Cowboys drafted Marcus Spears with the Bills pick.  What many fans may not know, is that Bill Parcells, the head coach at the time, was nearly adamant that they should draft Spears with the Cowboys 11th overall pick.  It was Jones who convinced Parcells that it would be prudent to draft DeMarcus Ware at 11, and wait for Spears to fall to the 20th pick.

In 2007, the Cowboys traded out of the first round, picking up the Browns 2nd and 2008′s 1st round pick.  The Cowboys eventually traded back into the first round drafting Anthony Spencer.  The Browns first round pick in 2008 became Felix Jones.

I suppose the moral of the above is “Once burned, twice shy.”  Jerry Jones must have 3rd degree burns.  Get well Jerry, the Cowboys need a good draft in April.

I'm not concerned with Roy getting 70 plus catches, but I would expect him to play the role he was expected to. Running inside slants to get 1st downs. Catching the ball when thrown to him, and being a big time target at the endzone catching several fades for TD's. The first and last are just desire plays and wanting it more than the other player.

I think if he has a BIG game in a close game in the playoffs, people will start to cut him some slack. God be with him if he has a great season, but drops 4 balls in a playoff loss.

i'm going to predict that roy williams has a big year this year. i'm not done with him yet as everyone else seems ready to throw dirt on him. i just seem to think he has talent and it will surface.

I like Boldin. What I don't like is that he is a catch and run guy. We don't run that type of offense. I think 2 years ago, they showed a stat that 70% of his catches from from 5 yards and in. So I'm glad we didn't trade for him.

And I understand that he was well underpaid for his performance. I'm sure he was as pissed about the Roy Williams deal as every Cowboys fan is. He also seems tougher than most, laying it out on the line even though he was risking injury.

All in all, I'm glad Boldin is a Raven and not in the NFC East.

Boldin would have gotten more if wasn't such a drama queen..We had one Diva we don't need another..

There are several underpaid guys on the team right now. I'm not sure that will make them more focused or sew the seeds of unrest.

Austin, Spears, Choice, Sensabaugh, and while I'm at it, Scandrick.

Oh yea the best thing that happened to Dallas this year was that roy got hurt so we could see what the under paid guy could do.

Worst decision EVER, next to Joey Galloway that was two first rounders. I was so mad when I saw the Boldin deal.

I don't think it was the worst decision ever, but I thought we would be better served to wait a year and see if he became a free agent. I doubt he would have and I believe the Lions would have franchised him. If we just overpaid him as a free agent, and didn't give up the picks, the fans would still be mad, but they would be ready to revolt.

Just shows JJ can make moves out of desperation

You know, this really pisses me off. This is a steal for Boldin in my opinion. 3rd and 4th round picks? Really? And we give up what for Williams and pay him what?

None of us expected Roy to be this bad. I know a majority of us were pretty happy to see him signed. But it's been a disaster and his career is completely ruined now because he's just not that good.
