The Roy Williams Trade Fiasco Revisited

This is a guest post from The Landry Hat fan and reader Joe Thomas:

As we enter the off season, we are now a year and a half into the Dallas Cowboys Roy Williams fiasco.  It is time for a look back on what this trade did for the Cowboys.

The Facts

On October 14th, 2008 the Cowboys acquired Roy Williams and a 2009 7th round draft pick from Detroit for the rights to the Cowboys 2009 1st, 3rd, and 6th round draft picks.  Roy Williams was given a 5 year, $45 million deal to play wide receiver for the Cowboys.

In 2009, his first full year with the Cowboys, Roy Williams produced 38 receptions for 596 yards and 7 touchdowns.  Not very good for the kind of picks and money the Cowboys gave up.

So What Did The Lions Do With The Draft Picks?

Round 1 they drafted Brandon Pettigrew, TE, who went on to produce 30 catches for 346 yards and 2 touchdowns in his rookie season.

Round 3 they drafted Derrick Williams, WR, who played very little at all in his rookie season.

Round 6 they drafted Aaron Brown, RB, who also played very little as the Lions 3rd option at running back.

So in one season, you could almost argue the Cowboys came out ahead statistically.

Opportunity Lost

If you argue the Cowboys should have never given up so much in the first place to get Roy Williams, who could they have drafted?

This is pure speculation, but if they needed a wide receiver the 2009 draft was full of them.  It may go down as one of the deepest wide receiver drafts ever.

If the Cowboys had retained their first round pick (20th overall) and used it on a wide receiver they could have gotten Percy Harvin, Hakeem Nicks, or Kenny Britt.  These were the next three wide receivers taken in the draft and all went in the first round.

What is somewhat shocking is that they all put up better statistics than Roy Williams in 2009.  Harvin, the offensive rookie of the year, had 60 receptions for 790 yards and 6 touchdowns.  Nicks went for 47-790-6.  And even Kenny Britt had  42-701-3.

Looking back, the Cowboys clearly missed out on some great, young wide receivers by trading for Williams.

What To Do Now

The Cowboys are in a bit of a dilemma here.  The good news is that there is a way out.  2010 is the now famous uncapped year (there is no NFL salary cap in 2010).  The Cowboys can choose to simply buy out Roy Williams and send him on his way.  That way they will not impact their cap room in future years.

This clears the way for Sam Hurd and Kevin Ogletree to get more playing time.  Maybe one of them can become the next Miles Austin.  AND the Cowboys could use their first rounder this year to try to find another wide receiver.  Maybe they will get the next Harvin or Nicks or Britt in the draft.

Roy Williams had his chance to make an impact.  He is either just not very good or does not jive well with Tony Romo, take your pick.  But now is the time to cut Williams and run.

I agree KD we could just put him on special teams but I wonder if this would give the media more fire to go on. Roy has been all for the team so far but would he still be for the team if he was not used? I think Jerry just got himself in a mess. The only way out is for Roy to start playing like a number 2 receiver but is this going to take away from Olgtree also this year.

Couldas wouldas and shouldas...

Must be nice to play with Jerry's money though... You're saying with your "way out" that you'd prefer just to pay Roy not to be here.

That's senseless. If you're going to pay him anyways he's fine as a 3rd, 4th, or 5th string receiver.

I mean, we used a roster spot for McGee one game (dunno why he wasn't emergency that game)

Worst case scenario is make Roy play special teams to justify his roster spot. But his numbers last year justify a spot on the team, the number of snaps though, probably not.

Good point on Roy..When he got hit in the ribs on a bad Romo pass he said at the time that was the hardest hit he had ever received..He looked hesitant the rest of the season..

Roy was the only receiver Detroit had until they drafted a true Number 1 reciever. That showed Detroit they really only had a slow handsy receiver in Roy with only a heart for one big contract. He got it and now he runs scared. Hope he manages his money well, it will be his last contract. A 1st. and 3 rd. round draft pick should be a starter for 3-5 years.

Please Cowboys don't ever draft anyone named Roy Williams again.....Please....

In fairness to JJ..The Roy Williams deal at the time looked good..The only complaint was the extra draft picks he had to give up..but may I remind everyone of RW stats the preceding years..

2007..12 games 64 catches 839 yards 5 td's
2006..16 games 82 catches 1312 yards 7 td's
2005..12 games 64 catches 839 yards 8 td's
2004..14 games 54 catches 817 yards 8 td's

His rookie year..2004.. he had better number than all three of those guys you mentioned..If you take his years in Detroit and extend his average yards to 16 games he averaged over 1100 yards a season..

Hindsight is 20/20 but there was ample reason to make the trade..The Cowboys just need to figure out what Detroit did that the Cowboys aren't doing..Hell they have Kitna on the roster..Ask him..

How about the potential that some of these rookies, too? All of them had really good first years and, except for Nicks, I'm interested in seeing how they progress. I think Nicks vs. Mike Jenkins is going to be an interesting match-up down the line.

Guys,
I wish we could all just get over the Roy Williams trade crap...In hind sight and looking back yes it was a bad trade..But 90% of everyone in here was all for the trade when it happened...You guys didnt give a crap about the price it cost and if you did you might have said yes we over paid a little bit but we got a stud wr...I remember reading the comments...No he is not playing up to his ability and im sure there are numerous reasons why. But the fact of the matter is it is done and he is here..JG needs to be a great oc which I dont think he is and start using Roy to his strengths more. As an oc in football myself I really dont give a crap about players being the number one guy or two guy or whatever...Its my job to put the players in the right positions and call plays to their strengths which is why I do not think JG is at the highest level yet..All you have to do is look at the momentum killing play he ran to Barber after Jones had just ran for about 25 yards on two carries to start the second half...Barber lost 5 yards on an oppo sweep and got crushed...Why do you run that play with your slowest back...That was beyond stupid...The bottom line is Roy isnt going anywhere..JJ owes him to much guaranteed money and hates paying players that are not on the roster, period...Roy has talent and if placed in the proper situations can help this team like he did in the first playoff game where im sure most of you were back to loving him again...Also the Boys do not believe in taking wr's in the first two rounds..So for you to say they would have taken so and so or so and so is way off base...I think the highest wr in the last 10 years they have taken was Antonio Bryant with the 3rd pick I beleive and that worked out great...And please give the Marshal and Boldin talks a rest..So we get rid of one idiot in T.O. and we thrive without him and his bs and you want to bring in his clone in Marshall..Seriously? And there is not enough balls to go around now with the group we got now, so you want to overpay again and take Bolden who cant even stay healthy the last couple of years...Come one boys fans lets wake up a bit and think in reality....But I still love ya all...

I would prefer Boldin over Marshall due to the idea Marshalls attitude could be similar to T.O..

Guys -

Some really great comments.

Joe R.- I agree that Harvin wasn't on their draft board, but that was after they already had Williams. Even if they didn't get Harvin, I'd still prefer either of the other two WR's taken late in the 1st round.

Mike - If we could get Boldin or Marshall we'd obviously be in the drivers seat. One thing I left out of my post was that there were rumors (after the Cowboys made the Williams trade) that the Cardinals would take a first and a third for Boldin. Even though it was way too late, the Cowboys possibly could have had Boldin instead of Williams for less.

Thanks guys for taking the time to leave insightful comments and thanks to the Landry Hat for posting my thoughts.

Joe

Nothing we can do about this now, but we got taken to the cleaners, and are still one of the top 6 or 7 teams in the league.

WR is the spot I would use our FA (5.5 mill and up) allowance on. I really don;t think there's another spot a rookie can come in and start.

Whether it's Boldin or Marshall, get another experienced playmaker opposite Austin, and we'll be real dangerous.

Pretty sure Roy won't be a good "team" guy, and accept being the 4th WR, so I'd try to dump him on somebody that realizes they need a WR in October.

The draft should be: LT, S, ILB, NT----FB, PK

DON'T trade down!! We only have a fews spots on this roster, so we need QUALITY, not QUANTITY.

Percy Harvin wasn't on the Cowboys's draft board. Rumor has it that he tested positive for drug use at the combine despite knowing that a test was forthcoming.

I wholly acknowledge that Roy Williams is under-performing his contract, but it's Jerry Jones's money and ego at stake. I sincerely believe that Jerry would prefer to waste 8 million rather than admit defeat. It would also open him up to more ridicule about his two trades for WR's (Joey Galloway).

Also, at the present time there is not a cap, and there is no certainty that a cap will return. At the very least, we will have a substantial amount of foresight as to when it would return.

Finally, I do lament not that we missed out on other WR's considering nothing has been proven at this point, but rather that we could have completely have rebuilt the offensive line with Oher in the first and Loadholt in the 2nd.

He's not going anyway. It's all dream land from here on out.

OMG I almost threw up when he said Percy Harvin lol. Thanks this just reminded me how bad this trade was. Really thanks alot.

I would SO MUCH love to have Percy Harvin over Roy freaking Williams.

Nice post, Joe
