So Wade Phillips is supposed to be the Dallas Cowboys coach for 2 more seasons, but there is still plenty of speculation surrounding his job.

One of the more interesting prospects to be the next coach for the Cowboys is current University of Florida coach Urban Meyer, according to a prospect.

Running back Mack Brown (I promise, I’m not making this up) of Lithonia, Ga. claims that a recruiter told him that Meyer has a job with the Cowboys “waiting for him” according to this article.

“They would say, he’s tricking ya’ll — he’s going to the NFL to coach the Dallas Cowboys,” Brown told the paper. “I was like ‘What?’ There’s no way.”

Brown wouldn’t say who said that, but Tennessee and Florida State had been on his heels to sign over the last month.

“I wasn’t too worried about it anyway, but coach Meyer told me he’s a Gator,” Brown said. “He’s coming back.”

My initial reaction was similar to Brown’s: no way.

What would Meyer do in Dallas? I imagine that he’d have a ball with our trio of running backs, but his offense isn’t exactly a pro-style offense. Can you imagine Tony Romo in a run-option offense?

Then again, Meyer is a genius at using the players he has to get their maximum performance. Take a look at his days at the University of Utah, where he led them to a perfect season and a Fiesta Bowl win over the University of Pittsburgh in 2004. It was the Utes’ first perfect season (12-0) since 1930.

Also, what else can Meyer accomplish in the college game? He’s taken a small program in Utah and transformed them into a national power. He’s won two national titles at Florida, now a powerhouse program. Maybe Meyer will go the way of former USC coach Pete Carroll and jump from the college game into the pros.

The claims of a college prospect are far from anything concrete. Then again, why would he make something up like this?

At any rate, this is one of the more interesting rumors I’ve heard about the Dallas Cowboys coaching job.

            BallHype: hype it up!

Intriguing and it would be incredible..The guy can flat out coach..

Speculation but still is food for thought..It is also the natural progression of a coach with his confidence..

I say bring it on..In two years he will be recharged and ready to burn it up again..

I think Urban Meyer is a great college coach but so is Spurrier. We know how that worked out. Carroll might make it work in Seattle because he actually runs a pro-style offense and has been in the NFL before. Meyer, of course, does not run a pro-style offense. All I have ever heard about the spread offense is that it’s exciting but not practical for the pros. Ask Graham Harrell how it translates.

As far as “What else can Meyer accomplish?” How about more championships. What’s wrong with chasing history. Does anybody really care that Barry Switzer won national titles then a Super Bowl? I’d rather be in the company of Rockne, Bryant and Joe Pa.

    Please no

This is not a good thing in my opinion. This cannot be true. Maybe it freaking is. Maybe he’ll be an assistant. I think it would be very bad if he became head coach.

Do keep in mind that this rumor has been filtered through a recruiter who isn’t Meyer, a high school player then the DMN. And if it is true, why do you leak that info to a high school kid? Isn’t this the kind of thing you keep under wraps?

I’d rather see him as an offensive coordinator first. Romo does pretty well out of the shotgun, which Meyer likes, and he managed to make Tim Tebow look pretty good. I think jumping straight into a head coaching job would be a big mistake.

Hat and fellow Boys fans who believe this crap…Those recruiters tried to use the jedi mind trick on brown…It didnt work on him but apparently it worked on you guys..That was one of the oldest recruiting tricks in the book….

Well, if the Orlando Sentinel can address it, as well as the Dallas Morning News and ESPN, then I figured that we could put it up for discussion on here. It’s more a “what do you think” piece than a “this is going to happen” piece. So how about you get your thoughts together and tell us what you think of Meyer possibly being the next Cowboys coach instead of just saying it’s a trick. Or is that too much to ask?

Since we are spreading rumors. There is another one going around saying Choice could be traded to the Chargers. I think that is far fetch but you never know.

[...] like an O rumor to me. Man that guy will say ANYTHING regardless if it is completely false. Urban Meyer To Coach Cowboys? | The Landry Hat | A Dallas Cowboys blog __________________ He stumbled and fumbled. Tennessee [...]

Also, keep in mind that a recruiter from another school claimed this to keep Brown from going to Florida.

Mr. Jones is a contingency type of guy. The story may seem far fetched but it does make some sense considering Son of Bum is only in until the end of 2011. Meyer is a good coach but unproven in the NFL, at this level. I don’t doubt they’ve discussed it, at the very least. Remember, these guys (coaches) are film addicts, it does not take a coach that long to adjust to a professional team, considering the high level of skill and learning curve these guys are on. He’ll make a decent coach but maybe not for the Cowboys.

  12. 12. T.E.X.A.S Says:

I don’t really know who the guy is but would it be an upgrade if he took Jason Garretts spot?

  13. 13. KD Says:

Omg would you guys please look at HISTORY here… The last time Jerry brought a guy from college to the NFL we were total blow hard…

    Oh wait.

Still, not sure I think it’s true =P Just wanted to play around a little.

  14. 14. T.E.X.A.S Says:

Not sure but wasn’t Jimmy from College before came here. Still don’t recommened this guy though.

That was the joke buddy =)
