Was Cowboys Shaun Suisham Signing Move Of A Genius?

Was the Dallas Cowboys signing of Shaun Suisham obvious? Is it the work of a genius?  Or will it eventually cost the team big-time down this very important stretch to the playoffs. The Cowboys (9-5) are fighting or a spot and they just released Nick Folk, who made 20-22 kicks last season.

Nick Folk kicked TWO 53-yard field goals against the Buffalo Bills for the win (one was discounted because time out was called). In his rookie season, he made the Pro Bowl. Cowboys fans rejoiced: “We finally have a field goal kicker!”

And then, all of the sudden, in the past six games, his career with the Cowboys imploded.

The Dallas Cowboys then dismissed Folk for missing a 23 yard field goal and they went out in the meat market and hired a guy who was released by the woeful Redskins for missing…you guessed it: a 23-yard field goal.

Shaun Suisham started his career with the Cowboys. It lasted a year.

But there is something interesting about this move.

The Cowboys play the Redskins next week at Fed Ex Field. Shaun Suisham returns to his former team of three years.

Either this move will be the act of a genius or one of a fool. Keep your fingers crossed.

Yea, Suisham signing looks real smart. Ask an Skins fan, he's a choker just like Romo.

I believe my brother is planning something the same. Good luck to you.

Also, I hope Dallas will keep two kickers, one for field goals and the other for kick offs and special teams. I think its a great idea and it gives you an extra tackler instead of an almost lame duck safety valve that the other team has to account for. If something happens to him then you can always fall back onto your other kicker. Plus, I think it's allowed Joe D to come up with some interesting plays. When they had wo kickers on for the onside kick...don't know which one it'll be or which side fo the field. I think they're on to something there.

I don't think we should have Folk back. I think a lot of his problems, mental as they may be, were because he wasn't comfortable with having another kicker around. Even though he knew he was still kicking field goals, it rubbed him the wrong way that they wanted someone else to do kick offs. I think that makes him a little selfish and maybe even a little ignorant. He doesn't have anything close to the cannon Buehler has and yet was bothered by the fact they wanted (needed) one for kickoffs. I think he will come out of this slump and he'll go on to be a great kicker, but I don't think it's the end of the world if he doesn't come back. There are future kickers out there and we'll just have to do our homework.

Suisham isn't as bad as everyone's making him out to be, either. He's hit 18 of 21 field goals this year.

I just wish we had put Folk on the IR. I've read stories where he claims he'd be open to a return to the Cowboys, but I'm not sure I buy that. Someone will take a chance on him. I just hope we don't pay for it.

First of all, Folk wasn't let go because he missed a short kick. That was more like the straw that broke the camel's back. He's missed too many this year and that's why they canned him. Now, Suisham was let go because he missed a short kick. He was doing pretty well all season and yet, they still let him go. I think it was a dumb move by the 'skins or they really think their rookie kicker is the next Folk (pre '09 mind you). Either way I do think he was the best kicker out there and I have to agree that it's pretty smart to have a player that has some insight in to the team you're about to play.

Not sure if it's an issue of "genius" or not.  It's a move of near desperation and Suisham was the "best" at the time, lol.
Yeah, it IS a shame that Folk was cut...hopefully he'll be invited to training camp next year and can prove that his past 6 weeks were only a fluke.

I've heard reports that Suisham alerted Phillips to the Redskins' trick field goal that they tried on Monday night. Sneaky!

KD, what the heck are you talking about? Shock value?

Sean Shiuisam beat the other four guys out. Nick Folk couldnt hit the broad side of a barn after hip surgery. So lets move on and hope suisiam can hit the sam percentage for us.

Just read your other article which says "stellar percentage" in reference to Sushi, so obviously you did know...

Guess this article is just for shock value then?

....... Do you know anything about Suisham other than his crucial miss against the Saints?

Like... The fact he didn't miss a field goal through 11 weeks? He sucked when he was here but he hit 19/22 THIS YEAR. I'd say that makes him tremendously better than Folk. Who cares what Folk did last year?

Shame we had to cut Folk, because Suisham won't be the answer long-term, but he was the best out there and I'm glad we have him.

I think it was genius Shankem will be out for revenge against his former team. It gives him more to play for and something had to be done about Folk. Im sad to see him go because I thought he was our kicking saviour but after the saints game its time for goodbye.

The way I see it: Field goals shouldn’t be in the game plan… The next two games need to be played with the idea of scoring Touchdowns!!! If it comes down to a 4th and 3 on the 20-25 or so…Go for it…Lob it down field, maybe we get a pass interference or1st down or TD… at worst (Skins/Eagles) get the ball and we as fans aren’t dying inside at the fact we just missed yet another chip-shot. Now, I understand points are points, and you never take a chance of not putting points on the board…That is the mentality of a team with a “For sure in the bag Place kicker” which we do not currently have. GO FOR IT!!!! We will need to destroy the Skins as they were destroyed by the G-men last night. How would the Cowboys image look to the playoff team’s heading into the playoffs if we beat down the Saints, the leagues BEST offensive team, then only score 10 points against one of the leagues worst. Those are my thoughts…Score Touchdowns, and we don’t need a place kicker….
