Champ Bailey Should Have Been Flagged For Pass Interference
Denver Broncos Champ Bailey should have been flagged with pass interference on the final play of the game last night in Denver’s 17-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The referee, who is shown in the video to be in a bad spot to catch the penalty, blew the call.

Of course, there is always proof in pictures. In this picture I exclusively retrieved, you can see Bailey’s right arm is illegally blocking Sam Hurd and interfering with his ability to make a catch. The referee, to the right, is in front of Hurd and cannot see the slick illegal move Bailey is doing here.
This was a blown call, plain and simple. The Cowboys should have had one more chance to score. What would have happened we will never know.

Umm… no, that is not pass interference. Bailey was moving faster than Hurd at that point, meaning that he wasn’t pulling against him. CB’s are allowed to have their arms around a receiver’s back as long as they don’t apply a force on them.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:00 amWell I mean it could be, only the 2 players would really know. But in my opinion, from the direction of movements I don’t think it is.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:22 amNOPE……… NOT PASS INTERFERENCE!!! CLEAN PLAY
October 6th, 2009 at 12:36 amFool….do you even understand the how football is played at all? If you think that is pass interference, you obviously have never played. The boys lost because Romo is ridiculously inaccurate, plain & simple. I’d rather have Orton on the cowboys than Romo.
October 6th, 2009 at 8:24 amWho cares if it was or wasnt pass interference (wasnt really)…. The more important question is what the HELL are you doing throwing the ball to a “shut down corner” 16 times during a game, and twice in a row at the end!!!!!!! He is called a shut down corner for a reason, and Miles Austin was open on that last pass, Romo’s decision making is not good, but unfortunately you need a great coach to light a fire under his a** and teach him how to do better, the cowboys do not possess that on their coaching staff. I want the staff fired, and bring in a legit coach. And if that coach cannot change Romo and help him grow as a player, then Romo obviously is incapable and should be tossed out. But I dont want to see Romo tossed until a really capable coach has some time to spend with him because I think a great coach could help Tony maximize his potential which he will never do with Wade Phillips at the helm or the overrated and predictable Jason Garrett
October 6th, 2009 at 10:01 amHank, you’re the idiot. Before acting like a douchebag, check the NFL rule book. You too, John. Check the bold!
It is pass interference by either team when any player movement beyond the line of scrimmage significantly hinders the progress of an eligible player of such player’s opportunity to catch the ball. Offensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is snapped until the ball is touched. Defensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is thrown until the ball is touched.
Actions that constitute defensive pass interference include but are not limited to:
(a) Contact by a defender who is not playing the ball and such contact restricts the receiver’s opportunity to make the catch.
(b) Playing through the back of a receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball.
(c) Grabbing a receiver’s arm(s) in such a manner that restricts his opportunity to catch a pass.
(d) Extending an arm across the body of a receiver thus restricting his ability to catch a pass, regardless of whether the defender is playing the ball.
(e) Cutting off the path of a receiver by making contact with him without playing the ball.
(f) Hooking a receiver in an attempt to get to the ball in such a manner that it causes the receiver’s body to turn prior to the ball arriving.
He violated 4 of the rules. This WAS absolutely pass interference. The rule saws you cannot hook or go through the back of someone to reach the ball.
October 6th, 2009 at 10:21 amYou better come up with another list because he did not violate any of those rules. Officials state over and over that yo may have a hand on the man as long as you do not turn the man.
October 6th, 2009 at 10:42 amb) he did not go through the back. X
c) and d) he did not restrict the players ability to catch the pass. XX
f) a hook? See above, he did not turn the receiver.
I dont care anymore time to move on Denver won even if we did come back and win it do you really belive our team deserved it besides our D. I agree with John we need a new coach this is a young team and you have to treat them like children if they screw up they need to be put in the dog house. Wade will not bring the best out of this team. Jerry should really think about bringing a new coach in at the end of the year. If we are not doing any better after the bye then fire him now. Even if we beat Kansas City I dont want everyone being like wow did you see Romos plays they were great he must have turned things around. Its KANSAS CITY so dont do it and if we lose against this team then really fire the coaching staff the only one that deserves to stay is the special teams coach.
October 6th, 2009 at 11:40 amWho is available for coaching our team. We need someone like Singeltary he has turned the 49ers team around from what they were. It is mainly cause the 49ers were a young team and their coach came in and showed them disipline. I see that Gruden might consider coming to Dallas and he seems to like Tony by the way he talks about him.
October 6th, 2009 at 11:44 amHE did NOT ONE of those jackass. Stop looking at the picture as a still frame and watch the play in motion. You can clearly see that it is NOT intereference. Don’t be a whiny fan who cries when their team sucks. The cowboys are extremely overrated. So what? some years are good and some are bad. GET OVER IT.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:00 pmBTW, If you were an official, you would call pass interference on every play under your interpretation of the rules.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:02 pmTo think we had a chance to hire Singleterry unstead we got wade phillips….ugh!!!
October 6th, 2009 at 12:07 pmThis article finally gave me the motivation to register. The title should read “Landry Hat should have been flagged for excessive whining.”
Seriously, you’re starting to sound like the idiot Ravens fans around here. Every game has bad calls. And I love the still photo instead of letting people see the entire play. This is Landry Hat at his finest!
Oh how I’ve missed you Dan!
October 6th, 2009 at 1:04 pmDon’t blame the ref in the picture. That is the umpire, whose main responsibility on pass plays is to call holding on lineman. There are three refs along the back of the endzone that could have called interference, if there had been on the play.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:30 pmThat’s not “the referee.” Only one of the seven guys on the field in the stripes is “the referee.”
The “official” in question appears to be #70, “umpire” Scott Dawson. That’s not his call. To say that he should make that call is simply incorrect. Pass interference is usually the purview of the back judge, the field judge or the side judge, even in a scenario (like this one) where the ball is snapped from the two yard line.
In the picture you “exclusively retrieved” (good for you! Your parents must be so proud), even though Dawson appears to look to his left, chances are he’s not looking at the contact in question, because that’s not his responsibility.
Since you’re so good at looking up the NFL rules, how about doing a little more homework and finding out who has responsibility for what in officiating mechanics if you’re going to be critical?
Now looking at the video (instead of a still), it’s hard to be 100% certain (unless you’re a fanboy with a blog, I guess), but it doesn’t appear as though there’s contact that constitutes pass interference.
Some fanboys just can’t handle it emotionally when their teams don’t win big and easily every week and so they look for a scapegoat. Officials are easy targets.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:32 pmYes I’m a cowboy fan. And no that is not even close to pass interference, just good corner play. He was well covered, there was a slim chance he would have made the catch.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:33 pmHe is gripping the front of his damn shirt. It’s PI.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:57 pmDidn’t look like PI when it happened and its highly unlikely to get a penalty ever called on “the last play of the game” usually will have to be obvious.
But the one that should have been called on Bailey was on the double move where Williams got his ribs busted. That was a perfect throw by Romo, they got the double move on Bailey and as Williams went by him he bumped him off his route slowing him by 2-3 yards. That pass would have hit Williams in stride and gone for 6 as he was behind the entire defense. Watch the film, where was the PI flag on that play? That would have essentially put the game away at that point but once again Cowboys screwed by the officials.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:26 pmOh man this is funny dude. I’m a Bills fan and I’ve never seen this level of rules lawyering and denial. First of all, the still doesn’t show if he was hindering his movement at all. Second of all, even if there was minor movement hinderance, stuff like this happens on every single play in the NFL. To go back to the strict text of the rules and ignore the realities of the game to try and justify why your team should have won is the height of denial. I should know. You should have seen the video analysis I did after the “Music City Miracle”.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:32 pmBailey is moving faster because he’s pulling Hurd back fellas. It was pass interference, but let’s be frank, the Cowboys shouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with. If you’re leaving the game up to the refs, you’re usually going to get screwed.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:39 pmwhen was the last time the Cowboys won a playoff game?
October 6th, 2009 at 2:48 pmHarry, you are right. Let’s move on. But I proved it. And everyone knows it
October 6th, 2009 at 2:52 pmT.E.X.A.S. and number 9..and all those citing Singletary and others for turning this and that team around..Wade went 13-3 his first year..
Miami was the rage of the NFL last season..Now look at em..
Denver is flying high now..but last season they did the same thing and lost the last 3 games to miss the playoffs..
It is a little early to talk all this turning around..This is only the 5 th week of the season..but feel free to rant..I don’t blame you..
BTW..It was pass interference and not the first..On the play where Roy Williams got hit in the ribs..Champ hit Roy and knocked him off stride..It was like 20 yards down the field..No call..
With these kind of no calls, no wonder he is so damned good..They frigging ignore him..
One thing you cannot deny, your damn eyes..The still shows his frigging right arm around his waist..Don’t believe what you see..Idiots..F em Dan..
October 6th, 2009 at 3:52 pmThe only thing you proved is that you’re a moron who has never watched a football game. Dallas is full of d-bag whiners like you that have every justification as to why they suck except for the one where they actually just plain suck. Get over it. You’re never getting anywhere with your shitty coach and your craptastic players.
Time to hit the reset button in big D.
October 6th, 2009 at 3:58 pmHey, I admit there are coaching problems, but I stand by the PI. I proved it.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:03 pmHis first year coaching he went 13-3 then the league figured him out. Now it is getting worse every year. Also Wade was lucky to start out with a team like this send him to 49ers and I bet we see how sorry he really is. We have a good team just no disipline time after time. Singeltary started to turn things around right away from the start even by benching one of there star players for his BS that is good disipline. The 49ers were horrible until Singeltary came in. Singeltary is way better of a coach than Wade and he is doing it with less STAR players hell they still have not even signed Crabtree and are still winning. Wade cant be disipline which causes the team to have no leadership and penalties and all the other bull that we have to put up with now. Roy should have been in on this play just to prove that he can be that number 1 receiver but lets feel sorry for him and his astma that he was just having problems with. I bet Irvin would have been in or how bout Emmitt.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:10 pmHurd didn’t even complain about it. I’ll take his word over some geek who paused a blurry youTube video at a convenient time. Maybe Romo should learn from Orton, who targetted one of the worst corners in the league (Newman) when it really mattered, and not one of the best (Bailey).
October 6th, 2009 at 4:16 pmBandit, Hurd did complain. To me.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:18 pmWell Hurd told me it wasn’t PI. So there.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:50 pmFine. I will take your word then, since you know him and all
October 6th, 2009 at 5:00 pmWell Hurd told me to tell you all to stop bugging his phone about this LOL.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:04 pmWow you are pathetic. Anyone cam make a blog these days.
October 6th, 2009 at 6:01 pmyou are right dan, and you proved it. thank you for your work it is greatly appreicated. it’s only week 5 boys, and we are 2-2 with the knowledge that we could have went 4-0. that means hope for week 5 and………
October 6th, 2009 at 6:03 pmLooks clean to me, like my super bowl ring
October 6th, 2009 at 6:04 pmhow did you get your handle? champ? yeah right
October 6th, 2009 at 6:07 pmdid’nt you mean eli’s sippy cup? dumb ass
October 6th, 2009 at 6:08 pmThere’s no way that’s pass interference, and as many commenters have pointed out you don’t have the slightest clue what PI is or how it’s enforced.
What’s more important–even if the penalty was (erroneously) called, the Cowboys still most likely lose that game. They’d have to then convert the touchdown on the next play, kick the extra point, win the OT coin toss, and manufacture another scoring drive. Odds of Romo/Wade pulling all those off: magic eight ball says no chance.
October 6th, 2009 at 6:44 pmQuit being such a crybaby. We lost the game because they made more plays than we did.
October 6th, 2009 at 11:03 pmAll – I watched the game from start to finish. Both teams played to the best of their abilitly for the entire night.
I have seen this play go either way, some days they call PI and some days they don’t. For the cowboy’s fan’s – the team shouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with, they had a lead late in the 4th.
For the Denver fan’s – win some lose some..at the end of the day, it’s a win in the books.
October 7th, 2009 at 11:29 pmand so be it. the wa the game goes. we should be 4-0. they should be 2-2, but they and WE ain’t. so week 5 is upon us and here we go. we got the chiefs and i say good medicine at this point. there is nothing like a good win to right the woes at right now. we go out there and get it, then see how we are feeling about things and go on to 6.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:47 amWell see how long Orton last in Denver, this is pretty funny though.
You all know the D is carrying this team, get real!
