Sam Hurd Leads Dallas Cowboys Third Receiver Race

by Cowboys

Sam Hurd is leading the way for the third wide receiver position for the Dallas Cowboys.

He outplayed the long-list of receivers the Cowboys have on the roster, and apparently the coaches aren’t happy about the poor performance of others. The Tweeting intern mentioned that coaches are not happy with the receiver group.

Hurd had five catches for 79 yards in the second quarter Thursday. A story here says Hurd may even compete for Patrick Crayton’s job.

Hurd’s biggest gain against the Raiders was a 30-yard jump ball he caught while shielding the pass from a defender. When the Cowboys arrived at camp much of the receiver talk was focused on whether Miles Austin could unseat Patrick Crayton as the No. 2 receiver. Hurd has injected his name in that discussion by running crisp routes and routinely coming up with miracle catches.

I guess they were not expecting Hurd to do as well as he is, but let’s not throw in the towell so fast. I personally don’t get it. All this talk after one preseason game? I have this feeling that Miles Austin or one of the other receivers will have a big day against the Tennessee Titans, instead of Hurd. I’ve yet to see enough that shows me Hurd is that much farther ahead of the pack. Have you?

Sure it's nice to have someone stretch the field, like Terry Glen used to, but I don't understand why people think speed is essential. Short precise routes that create separation create first downs.... The greatest receiver of all time wasn't fast and his name is Jerry Rice.

The Cowboys already have a great possesion receiver and thats Roy. Im with bevomav Austin speed is more needed. We have Crayton and he really does not have good speed. Lets just hope Austin dont drop the ball anymore.

i'd keep barber just due to the fact of what you said, the wear and tear on portis? that takes it's toll. barber is going to be more of a role player then just a work horse. that still means 1000-1200 yds, 8-10 tds 3rd down passing attempts???? he'll be used just not exclusive. he's younger and no wear on the tires. but portis is a horse, but an old horse? i'd go barber, but i'm cowboy. i know it killed landry to say it too, but when it came time to drop the ax, he'd go barber.???hahahaha

I didn't see Hurd let any passes hit him in the hands and fall to the ground, so that's a pretty good start. Oggletree looked the best in returns. Stanback is just pitiful as a return man, get him OFF the field.

I'd keep Portis, honestly. And that hurts to say it. Tough call

Fellas,I need help! Im in a keeper league and I have to let go of Portis or Barber. Portis will get a ton of carries but he’s more prone to injury under that heavy workload. Barber on the the other hand is gonna have to split carries with Felix, but I feel Barber will be a TD monster like 2008 when he split carries with Julius.   Help me out!

Austin is the only receiver on the roster who can stretch the defense..Hurd is a possession receiver..For that reason alone..I feel Ausin..will be the number three...

Unless he drops passes on a regular basis...

I think Hurd, though oft injured just like Miles Austin, has been more consistent. Austin had 13 catches last year and 3 were for TD's and everyone in the media wants to anoint him as this year's breakout receiver for the Cowboys. i don't see it. I do see Hurd making big catches and even playing well on special teams. Don't forget it was Hurd that enabled Tony Curtis to get that onside kick recovery in the Bills game a couple years ago. He's just a great player that gives it his all every play. I think he will prove to be a better receiver than Austin (excluding the return game of course)..

Hurd is a good reciever and has much room to improve, you have to remember that he was hurt last year. so if he can stay fit,Hurd can be a great help toward the bowl and impact off the field
