Matt Jones: Agent Has Talked With Cowboys, 3 Other Teams

Written by theMBIIIeffect

Former Jags receiver and Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones said in an interview with 103.7 FM in Little Rock that his agent has been in touch with the Dallas Cowboys, as well as the Titans, Bears and Jets according to True Blue writer Josh Ellisblog.

Jones has had well-documented substance abuse issues and is now a free agent after being released by the Jaguars. Since no suspension was handed down by the NFL, Jones could participate fully in any training camp, preseason game and regular season game.

Jones was optimistic about his chances at a comeback.

“Things are looking good,” Jones told the radio station. “Something probably will happen sooner rather than later. We just want it to be a good fit and somewhere where I can get in there and help a team win.”

Could Jones help the Cowboys break their long post-season drought, or would he be another distraction in the locker room?

I have to disagree, I think if the wildcat takes time to evolve it won't be around long. I just can't see this being effective if the defenses are gearing up for it. It's a formation full of TRICK PLAYS. Trick plays are cool but they are only good when they surpries, or TRICK a defense.

yeah, with mjones being a former qb does give some options there. i think the "wildcat" formation will take some tweeking over the next few years. with all the multi-purpose players coming in the league, it is probably something that will evolve slowly with all teams having some variation of it.  jones would be a plus for dallas.

And another thing is can you say wild cat formation? That would be another huge asset for the boys

i always backed owens, but he wanted the ball always. which is not the problem. the real problem with that is you need to be able to spread the ball around so the D can't focus to shut that down and limit your offensive tactics.....like they did to us so much last year( does anyone recall the draw play). now no-one can focus in on where to target to try to stop us. the deception is huge for our offense this year. start with the run....pound it, and then flank em with quick passes outside, spread the coverage, then nail em in the heart with witten over the middle. you got a D suckin air and lookin around.

hell yeah cody. i'm lookin at the stats too. and i'm seein 750 yds 6 tds and 4.3 speed? come on. we got injury bug hurd, austin, stanback????? we got ?????in the rest......hell holly looks good to what we got sittin there after the 4 that are on contract. jones would be a great compliment to roy and then put crayton back in the slot where he belongs. we can bring in austin to stretch the field(when he is'nt injured). sign holly to the practice squad and maybe sign one more. then cut the rest and move on. we have witten, bennett, and with jones at 6'6"??? it's like have a basketball team for romo out there. thats some big targets. with the talent we got coming out of the backfield????? romo will have plenty of targets to spread the offense. that is precisely why owens was cut.

all i know is he played 12 games last year with around 775 yards and lead the team.  I will admit im from arkansas and im trying not to put the rose colered glasses but common sign him!!!

Look at his numbers. They aren't all that impressive. Sure, it might be that he didn't have a great quarterback throwing to him, but I think that we could use the weapons we have right now to do the same thing that Jones would do.

Yeah plus who cares about the risk as long as he helps us WIN. I hate to side with Jerry but when you win it doesn't really matter what's going on. But if it's hindering you from winning then it multiplies the problem exponentially. I like the moves we've made this offseason (except not acquiring much at all) and don't think this one would undo anything.

It is worth the risk. I read about his incident and it does not seem like a kid to repeat it. Safer risk than Pacman by a lot

By lines you mean like the betting line right? Like the line on the Cowboys is -45? Yeahhhh I wish there was that kinda difference maker out there.

I like 'em. Sign him. Let's do some lines!

It's funny how such a mediocre player can get people so stirred up. This is already round 2.

I can't believe I'm really getting into this grammar with you right now.

I said if you're cutting cocaine in a car with a credit card, THEN you have issues. Meaning THEN, at that moment, at that time, in that particular instance, you have a problem. It's a conditional statement. Is he cutting cocaine in a car with a credit card right now? For all I know, no. Could he be? It's not impossible. You're putting words in my mouth and it's starting to piss me off.
Jones ran a 4.37 while high is more like it.....(had to get a cheap joke in there)

I didn't realize the kid was that fast. Wow. He's probably using 'roids.

theMBIIIeffect you said in you first post that

"ALP, if you’re inside a car cutting up cocaine with a credit card, then you have issues."

That it very different than had or has had. Have is present tense and Had is past tense.

HowleyFan Matt Jones ran a 4.37 and a 4.40 40 yard dash at the combine. 4.37 was his low and 4.40 was his high.

I just looked up Matt Jones' 40' time and it turns out he ran a 4.41. Yes that is fast but not that fast. There are plenty of guys in the 4.3's including Ogletree who is on the Cowboys. Pat Watkins is good proof that size and speed aren't everything.

ALP, at that time, when he was cutting the cocaine in the car with his credit card, he HAD a problem at that time. It was in that moment that he HAD the problem. He HAS HAD problems is the same thing. Never did I imply that he wasn't over his substance abuse.

6'6"..225..and would be the fastest guy on the team..I see no downside ingiving him a shot..at vet min..

thembIIIeffect no you are wrong. If over a year ago you were in a car cutting up cocaine with a credit card and now a year later have never test positive for any other drugs....you HAD a problem. Get it had rather then have.

ALP, if you're inside a car cutting up cocaine with a credit card, then you have issues.

Cocaine is hard to piss-test positively for, though... That being said I love the comparison to Josh Hamilton... Josh is a great case for a guy like Jones -- He licked his drug habit and now he's a premier player (sucks now but..... this is a cowboys blog)

I'd like 'em for here, don't think it'd be a distraction in the locker room just cause you'd have to think that one guy can be handled, last year it was several guys...

Yeah dave... let's sign 'em.

sign his ass then, he's 6'6" and 225???? what the hell we waitin for?

"Jones has had well-documented substance abuse issues"

Hes had one issue. Not two or three or however many (obviously more than one) "well-documented substance abuse issues" points to. Jones was arrested for coke once. Hes never been arrested for it again and the only reason he was cut from the Jags is because he violated his probation by drinking a few beers while golfing. Hes been tested for over a year and never tested positive for any other drugs.

I think Jones would be a good receiver for the Boys..He is tall and fast..He would team with RW to  make one hell of a set of WR'S..

I cut these guys more slack than a lot of people..Plus everyone's favorite Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers..was a crack addict..Now he walks on water..
