This brings a different level of responsibility to a Cowboys player. You are under a microscope and it’s no secret. Other teams are watched as well but not near as closely. Nobody cares wants happening in Houston or Detroit. Sure, goofing off with your brother isn’t going to cause you to have a bad workout. The media hounding you followed by the constant judgment of dozens of reporters whether they have actual insight or not will affect concentration. If your not focused completely on football your performance will suffer.

The bigger the media buzz, the more likely you are to get suspended. This is not always fair but it’s true. Do you think Roger Goodell would care about the “Black Olympics” if it wasn’t all over ESPN and other news outlets. Because of the exposure Goodell is forced to consider taking action. How Goodell handles this reflects the NFL’s views. If he does nothing it will make it look like the NFL is racially insensitive.

Just like you I would rather hear about how Martellus Bennet has been training this offseason. The fact is, everything involving a Dallas player will be on ESPN. The resulting media buzz will affect performance. The fewer people that are prone to extra attention the better. We cleared out every headache this offseason and now the media is looking for a new one. Martellus needs to learn how to avoid this attention so he can focus. To ignore such a story would be irresponsible by a blog that is designed to bring news about the Cowboys.

This was on ESPN. Granted, ESPN reaches every now and then. But it trickled down. People are writing about it and this incident, although you don’t think it has to do with football, has everything to do with his public perception. And that public perception is very important to one Roger Goodell.

I can guarantee you that if any football player makes a sex tape or beats his kid, it’ll become part of football because Roger Goodell has a thing for suspending guys. That’s how off the field stuff becomes about football. The good old days of football are gone. All of this stuff does matter now. I’m sorry that you haven’t noticed. Was Tony Romo’s trip to Mexico before the playoffs football? No, but it sure as hell mattered on the field. Was Adam Jones’ fondness for making it rain on strippers football? No, but it’s sure as hell affecting him right now.

So, because of this video that Martellus Bennett has made, several people have weighed in. Jemele Hill from ESPN did. Here is what USA Today had to say about it. Even Jean-Jacques Taylor blasted him for it. What you don’t seem to grasp is the public relations nightmare this is for the Cowboys. We were supposed to be cleaning house and starting with a new team full of good guys. Peoples’ interpretations of what he did are different. I’m sure his intentions were to make a joke, but he did the opposite. So many people found his video remarkably offensive. This got blasted all over so many news outlets that we had no chance to ignore it and I’m sure that Roger Goodell heard it. Could there be a suspension? Perhaps. I think it’d be pretty harsh, but it’s his second offense. Last time, he got a fine from the Cowboys. It could be worse this time around, and he could be seeing some pine when the season starts. THAT, my friend, is why it is football. It has mattered, it will matter now and it will continue to matter as long as Roger Goodell is the commisioner.
