OLB Anthony Spencer Joins Roy Williams on Hot Seat

By: theMBIIIeffect

Yesterday the Dallas Cowboys finally released Greg Ellis, a long-awaited move that completed the clearout of malcontents in the Cowboy locker room.

The move came as a relief to Ellis, an 11-year veteran and first-round pick in 1998, who revealed that he wanted to leave two years ago after Dallas drafted Anthony Spencer to be his replacement.

“As far as football, for the last couple of seasons, it probably would have been better for me to be on another team,” Ellis said. “Not anything against the Cowboys – I love the guys, I love the Cowboys, obviously having been here so long – but it was kind of some awkward situations there.”

With Ellis gone, the starting OLB spot opposite DeMarcus Ware is Spencer’s to lose.

But does Spencer have what it takes to be the long-term replacement for Ellis?

Right now, I don’t know. Spencer has played only a bit part in his last two seasons in Dallas, getting limited snaps as Ellis’ backup. He hasn’t had much of a chance in Dallas’ 3-4 defense, with only 70 tackles and 4.5 sacks over the past two seasons.

But one thing is for sure: Spencer will join wide receiver Roy Williams as the most scrutinized players of the Dallas Cowboys.

Just like Terrell Owens’ release paved the way for Williams to be Tony Romo’s top receiver, Ellis’ departure hands the starting spot to Spencer on a silver platter. So, for the entirety of the season, Williams and Spencer will have to hear themselves compared to Owens and Ellis, respectively.

Spencer faces additional pressure from rookies Brandon Williams and Victor Butler, both drafted this year.

So, if Spencer slips up, he could be out of a starting job just as quickly as he found himself in it.

Cowboys linebacker coach Reggie Herring weighed in on Spencer’s abilities and gave the outside ‘backer an early vote of confidence.

“I think with the extra reps and having the ability that he does have, we’re expecting him to give us more sacks and more production,” Herring said. “It’s expected. The pressure’s on and I’m sure he’ll respond. He’s a pretty focused guy right now.”

Listen the Cowboys have made a statement that they're not interested in bringing him back but he was NOT THAT BAD. For the money we paid him he did his job. He was a bone head but made some good plays and some bad ones.

Shit, you probably wanted Keith Davis to come back (let me say, I did too) and he gave up TWO ridiculous TDs to the Ravens with pussy-footed tackling!!!

I don't want Pacman back, but seriously dude on the field he wasn't nearly as bad as everyone now remembers. I think he'd be a 3rd corner for us.

Reason #5974126412541 Why Jerry Jones needs to step down as GM. During the George strait concert at the new stadium a reporter asked if he would be open to have Pacman return to the Cowboys his response was "Would you beat me up too bad if I brought back Adam?" I hope he was just drunk out of his mind.

win the superbowl! how about  a playoff game! or a reg season game when it matters...

I think the 'sissy coaching staff' is getting way overplayed. Wade works his team out harder than any other team is seeing BEFORE training camp. Which is why he has the privilege to run "camp cupcake" -- because he doesn't have to deal with getting his players into shape like other coaches do.

I dunno that's just my take. Parcells is too tough, Wade is too soft. If we had won a Super Bowl last year no one would have a problem with Wade or Jason Garrett's transparent play calling. May be a stupid statement but it's true -- No one's criticizing the Steeler's lack of Quarterback.

Personally, though, I do think Wade is a MUCH better Defensive Coordinator... Probably the best in the league. Garrett I dunno about. But a Shanahan (HC) / Phillips (DC) / Garrett (OC) Lineup would be sweet huh?

Oh yeah, but Wade being soft... Blown out of proportion... Like everything else in Dallas media.

u r rite dave i just dnt know what scares more cboys secondary or the sissy coaching staff

no, i've been looking for it. i heard it was veiwed over the large hdtv screen in the stadium and it got the loudest ovation of the night? nice of jimmy to stop by, but i think the jimmy days in dallas on not to be this year, but you just never know down the road?????

anyone else see the photo of jerry n jimmy on dallas news.com?

Nate you might be right but he still hasn't won a playoff game and even though that's a TEAM that wins the game, everyone likes to think it's his fault... even though our playoff drought extends long before Romo.

i would throw romo on the list of most scrutinized players as well.

Spencer should look out for Williams, he could easily compete for snaps -- But trying to single out one player is exactly what is wrong with Dallas. You think the pressure's on Spencer any more than it is on the whole TEAM?

Think again, you may give the rest of the guys a break and just focus on Williams, or Spencer, or Romo...

It's the whole TEAM I'm gonna be givin' shit.

Now of course one of those three guys MIGHT make an excellent scape goat now and again... =) =) =)

Competition breeds excellence, and there isn't a whole lot of competition in Big D right now.

One must almost hope that Spencer gets his share of media attention and gives Roy Williams and Tony Romo a break...
Overall I just don't like players just getting their roster spots instead of having to earn them. Spencer has basically no competition, same goes for Williams. Time to show up for both of them.
