Dallas Cowboys Draft Free Safety Michael Hamlin

The Dallas Cowboys now have two Hamlins in the secondary.

It was a bit surprising to see Michael Hamlin fall to the fifth round, but the Clemson free safety did and the Cowboys snagged him.

The only wide receiver the Cowboys grabbed is Manuel Johnson, from Oklahoma. This guy is small, but some scouts believe he has as much talent as some of the third round guys who were taken at his position.

It's going to be ok to take those three kickers though because Buehler will be able to do more than just kick.

hahaha "noodle leg"  I think so far thats the plan they want to take 3 kickers on game day. (Folk, Mcbriar and Buehler)

I meant noodle for kickoffs and yeah that may have been harsh but he was very bad at them. Paulescu is no longer on the roster so I take that to mean that McBriar is fine.

Hard to call Folk's leg a 'noodle' lol, he's got some great range when it comes to field goals... Just not kickoffs =)

I like Nick Folk a lot but God he did piss me off on kickoffs.

However, I have a hard time believing the Cowboys will keep 3 kickers on the roster. What's new with McBriar, anyone?

He asked Folk to put the ball high and to a corner.  He wasn't asking him to land it on a bullseye. The whole reason Folk had to do that was because of his noodle of a leg. Now there is no more kickoff problem.

MBIII from what I read Bruce Read wanted Folk to place the ball between the corner of the endzone/1 yrd line and the 5 yrd line. I think this is why Folk led the league with 5 out of bounds kickoffs.

I will say, it's different when you look at the draft this way, only analyzing what the Cowboys got... It makes things a lot easier to handle, makes me feel good about what we got...

But when you look at other teams, especially NFC East teams, and what they did in the draft and in their offseason... It makes me pretty uneasy.

We shoulda signed some of those BA free agents that were out there.

Well I have to bite my tongue here. I said earlier it would be a waste to draft a LB with our 51st pick and sure enough Jerry trades down and picks up a LB. I was pissed as all hell after waiting 2 and 1/2 hours to see our first pick traded, and then to see us pick up a guy I never heard of. However the more I read about this Williams kid the more I like. I think there is something to be said about a LB who can run a 4.49. And a kicker who can out bench a lineman.

Todd Mcshay said he was disappointed in the Cowboy's drat. He said they drafted a lot of athletes and not football players.......SPECIAL TEAMS!!! This whole draft class was to find athletes who can fill the void in ST and can contribute on D.....Wade Phillips style!

You mean the end zone?

I dont like the pick simply because Bruce Read was asking Folk to do the impossible which was placing the ball at a very specific part of the field during a kickoff all because our ST's sucked. But I'll give it a chance to let it play. I still wanna see a new beefy back up NT in camp.

There is nothing wrong with a kickoff specialist. I was angry at first but after looking at the numbers, Buehler had 55% of his kickoffs get touched back. Dallas was the only team with out a touchback last year. Folk sent four kicks out of bounds and we had the worst opposing starting position with our opponents starting at their own 30. Nothing wrong with getting better on special teams. Not to mention our kicker can beat up half the guys running at him on any given kick now. For clarity sake, Folk isn't going anywhere for field goals unless we need to try one from 70.

I actually liked that kicker pick, number 9. David Buehler can knock them into the end zone consistently. We had big problems with kickoff returns last year and that starts with Nick Folk's leg. He's accurate as all get out, but he didn't register one touchback all last year. Plus, this guy is a physical freak. He ran a 4.63 40-yard dash and he put up 27 reps on the 225 pound bench press. He beat Michael Oher and Eugene Monroe on the bench, for christ's sakes. The Dallas Morning News is already reporting that he'll have other roles than just a kickoff specialist. Howleyfan mentioned to me that Buehler went somewhere else before his time at USC, and during that time he played some outside linebacker.

Those 4 to 5 "legitimate" corners shouldn't be starting in this league. There is a lot of potential for later years but jenkins and scandrick aren't ready to start. Why wouldn't we sign one of the 6 proven corners that I mentioned to give us 2 years while the young guys get better

has anybody else noticed that he picked up CBs that have a nose for the ball and DEs that are known to rush the passer..hello? this is Wades system..Dallas will be Blitzing the crap out of the other teams...Ware will break the record this year just watch..although i think we shouldve picked up a NT im confident on the players we got...i believe Wares deal is going to be bigger than we think which is why we didnt get any high picks...i really like our defense this coming year..and remember this is a copy cat league..who won the SB last year? the #1 Defense not the high powered offense...the boys want to control the game..running the ball more and lettting romo manage the game with Roy (sure hands) Williams..say what you want about him but i believe if RW is tutored by #88 he will be great..he has Irving potentials..great hands alright speed and good size..all he needs to know is practice like 88 did

NT is something that should have been addressed in the draft. I didnt think drafting a Kicker was necessary at all. was that pick a waste or what??

Good stuff steamroller. I think Wade is taking defense and special teams to a new level. It should be fun.

Dallas cut Adam"Pacman" Jones and traded Anthony Henry. Newman is a guaranteed starter and now there are 4 to 5 legitimate players competing for that other roster spot beside him. Orlando Scandrick, Alan Ball, Mike Jenkins, and Mike Mickens is a corner. The talk was about moving DeAngelo Smith to safety if necessary. Michael Hamlin is a safety and Stephen Hodge is a safety as well, but he will be moved to LB. In this 3-4 system Wade Phillips is going to move these guys around, but most importantly is the fact that Dallas drafted to improve the special teams while at the same time looking for guys with potential, who are not afraid to get physical and hit somebody. Stephen Hodge and  Michael Hamlin were good picks. DeAngelo Smith and Mike Mickens were also good picks. Plus what about last years picks at CB? I don't think this is as big as the fact that Ratliff is on his own at NT. If we need anything it is a NT. Someone better than Tank Johnson.

I just looked at the cowboys site and they had both cornerbacks from the draft listed as safeties. See first comment about picking up a veteran cb now.

MBIII did in fact call the Williams move to the inside. I think we're going to do the same with one of the other olbs. We talked about moving that CB from Cinci to safety also. Along with Hamlin and Sensabaugh I'm content with our safety situation for now. Ogletree was a great signing about an hour ago.  He is extremely fast and his only real problem was a knee injury from 2007 that scared people off. We also did a good job getting better on special teams with this freak of a kicker and a lot of linebackers and defensive backs that will have a lot of proving themselves to do.

Dre' Bly, Somari Rolle, Ken Lucas, R.W. McQarters, Deltha O'Neal, Allen Rossum. Can we please sign one of these guys to add a veteran cornerback. Newman is the only guy with more than a year of experience. All of the above names are UFAs.

We took guys higher than we needed to. All of our first three picks were kind of reaches, so our grade is going to be somewhere around a D. By no means was ours the worst draft out there. I just think that Jerry and Wade had a particular plan going into this draft and they took the players that are going to fit into that plan.

Earlier today I predicted that Williams was going to play inside backer (HowleyFan was with me when I made this prediction and can testify to it), which Jerry Jones confirmed on ESPN this afternoon. The guy is 6-1, 241 pounds and he ran a 4.49 at his pro day. He's going to be a solid backup and he's probably going to play some nickel backer right away. But he's definitely going to get some time at special teams right away. I like the depth we picked up on both lines, at backer and in the secondary. I think that McGee will be a very competent quarterback eventually and John Phillips is a pretty solid blocker and a natural receiver at TE.

Sure I'd give 'em a C+ too, if I didn't even pay attention to the other NFC East teams handin' it to us in the offseason AND in the draft.

I know a lot of people didn't like the draft but Dallas might had some reaches but they also got some steals too this to me is depth draft for the Cowboys.  I hope it turns out well they could of done more I know they wanted to save money I'll give it a C+ since they didn't get more linemen or a backup nose tackle.
