Dallas Cowboys 2009 Draft List Is Scary Bad

by Cowboys

I’m really concerned, folks. The Dallas Cowboys did some house cleaning this off season and got rid of a safety,  some cornerbacks, and some linebackers. But they also lost their top draft pick in a trade with the Detroit Lions

This leaves the Cowboys waiting for 50 drafted players before they get to pick. On their draft list of visitors to Valley Ranch, there are only three safeties. Now, there is probably a majority of fans who believe safety will be the first position the Cowboys attack. They asked Luis Delmas, Darcel McBath and Michael Hamlin to visit. Delmas looks to be the top prospect for the Cowboys. Delmas is not a horrible pick at No. 51.

But the rest of the list shows a much scarier picture. Four wide receivers were brought to Valley Ranch and all four are average receivers who might–just might–get lucky and contribute to something other than special teams. Patrick Turner doesn’t impress me and Mohamed Massaquoi drops too many balls. MBIIIEffect likes Brian Robiskie, out of Ohio State, but I do not. There’s not a wide receiver the Cowboys asked to come who I think could have an immediate impact. It is proof that Sam Hurd, who recently resigned for a year, and Miles Austin will have to step up in 2009.

The Cowboys didn’t ask Pat White, the West Virginia quarterback, for a visit. No idea why, but they didn’t. They invited Tom Brandstater and Stephen McGee. I think this could mean the Cowboys may not pick a QB in the draft or they will do so very late. Pat White may no longer be on the radar.

Take a look at the list of players and let’s figure out who is the best prospect for the Cowboys with their first three picks in the 2009 draft.

Here’s the list.

Lol, MBIII -- Yeah I remember, haha.

Everyone hear the stadium already has a name? Naming rights are to come later, apparently.

And they only want a 2nd pick for Q now?

Cowboyswin08:

"I think to draft a linebacker with our 51’st pick would be an absolute waste" is what I said.

HowleyFan:

"I think to draft a linebacker with our 51’st pick would be an absolute waste"
That is what I said. I didn't say to draft a linebacker in the draft would be a waste. I agree we need depth at the position but not bad enough to take a linebacker with our first pick. Not to mention that anyone of our starters would start on almost any team in the NFL. I think a S is our number one priority at 51.

Also, when naming the linebackers we have you simply named 4 starters and a scrub. That sounds like a depth problem to me.

Football is not played only on Sundays.  Barbie has had 3 years of practice to prove himself. Not only is our depth at linebacker a problem on the defensive side of the ball but also our special teams. A shaky coverage team is going to need a lot of help especially if we don't get Davis back.

td, how can it be a waste to take a linebacker?  Are you saying that because you don't think there are any worth that pick or you don't see that as a need?  We really have absolutely no depth at that position and I question even our starters.  It is a position of need and one of our top ones, in my opinion.  I don't think the value is there at 51 but I am a long way from an expert.  That said we really do need to get one or two this weekend.

Do you not remember Emmitt as a commentator, KD?

I think to draft a linebacker with our 51'st pick would be an absolute waste. We have linebackers, Ware, Ellis, Brooking, James,  and we need to let Carpenter play and prove himself worthy or not worthy. I think it comes down to who is the better player at the S or WR position when it comes to 51.

I'm not sure if we were talking about it here or if it was on the radio but I've heard his name a couple of times.

Jerry's Draft Press-Conference was a joke. I love the guy and think he's great but geez... Talk about your all-time worst speaker.

Good thing is, he's one of the best owners, save maybe for Mark Cuban.

have any of you guys done any research on this kid terrence moore from troy. SS 6'1" 219 lbs and a good tackler with a nose for the football. i like what i've seen and heard about him. he played with mccelvin last year and it was a good D. this kid will be a 3rd or probably a 4th rnder but should be higher based on pure talent? anyone hear of him?

There are two later round prospects from Ole Miss that I hope Dallas doesn't overlook and one is a Safety. Jamarca Sanford.

The other is a WR. Mike Wallace. And not just because of speed. He looked really good in the Cotton Bowl and in the Senior Bowl this year, and as a fourth or fifth round pick he is definately worth grooming into NFL shape. He performs well under pressure and in the big games. He has confidence in his abilities and he has all the tools to become great. Speed, hands, quickness, all of it. He just needs someone who can get him the ball and he never had that in college.

As far as anyone on that list though Dan, I think I would have to agree with you on Delmas. He seems to be the one that sticks out as the most probable at #51 (on the invite list that is). I think Chung will be better though. In all likelyhood he could be gone though, so.... Delmas-- round two would be a good pick.

Jerry Jones says safety and linebacker are the #1 priority, so I doubt Pat White or Robiskie or any other WR's will be drafted on day one. Offensive line and defensive line are also priorities as far as depth. AND, as much as everyone is sick of Crayton, he is sadly one of Dallas's if not Dallas's most dependable reciever now. With Roy it was the foot last year, Hurd, Austin, and Stanback have had a long list of injuries...so Patrick Crayton though slow and big mouthed and all, we do need him now that T.O. is gone. If nothing else for depth himself if Austin can step up and stay healthy. I hope that is the case.

Imagine what Gonzo does to opposing defenses. You can't stack the box anymore, and you have to stack the box against Michael Turner. Opposing defenses are going to have to pick their poison.

I don't know, Bevomav. Depending on what mock draft you look at, Robiskie is either the 5th or 6th best wide receiver. We might need to move up a little bit but I think even if we do have to move up, he'll be the guy who will probably be close enough to 51 that will make moving up to get him easy AND he'll be the best value pick.

I know that the Cowboys like Delmas and Robiskie but what IF they are both available at 51?? Chance are thats not going to happen but what if?? I think Cowboys should go with Delmas - Keith Davis is still not signed and Watkins has not gotten any better.

I happen to like Robiskie he is probably the best reciever in the draft other than crabtree or maclin but he isnt a speed demon so that maybe what is keeping him from being a sure 1st RD pick.

Do we throw the falcons in the "super bowl contender" conversation?? I think not...while getting Gonzo surely helps I think their defence can still be exposed.

The NFC south is going to be as good as the NFC EAST....

Honestly ... the AFC has some division with powerhouses in it... but they don't have 1 division where all 4 teams are contenders... the NFC has the EAST and the SOUTH...

I think the NFC will finally take the reigns back as the division to beat! They began to do it last year, but there was still an argument to be made... This year there may be no argument to be made.

TONY GONZO IS A FALCON... they just got a whole lot better...

I'm not so sure 4 years 7 mil is a mortgage but I agree that Crayton is garbage and wouldn't mind seeing him off for just about anything

Delmas and Robiskie will be gone by 51...Hamlin may be the pick..or Chung..S..from Oregon..
BTW..our number one pick was Roy Williams..If he steps up..all will be forgiven..

wow i'm pumped, you know they'll have a camera crew sittin on the doorstep of our war room. ed werder will be eatin sandwhiches and pissin in a tincan just not to miss one moment of the action on sat. outside the room........i'd be there too, but i got a big shindig goin with my boys........woooooooooooooo. Dday!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea I just don't see Crayton being anymore than a stand in #2 and if we could trade him for draft picks I say do it. Something is gonna happen, I know Jerry isn't going to sit and wait till number 51.

i say deal him. huge contract, not any more potential for us than what you just mentioned. the really only thing he brings to the table for us is the fact that he has starting experience over our young guys. but this would give a kid like robiskie the chance to get playing time right away with the rest of our young guys, and do just what jerry wants....the development of our young wrs.

True, I have given up on Hurd, I think Miles is better and has more to offer. Hurd got a start against the Jets two years ago and couldn't get any separation plus he is not much faster than Crayton. What are the possibilities regarding trading Crayotn during draft day.

not to mention we have a house mortgage on crayton as well

yes we'd love to see robiskie, but several things seem to say that might not happen either. there will be a rush on wrs at the end of the first round and robiskie may get snatched in that area. and we have negotiations now with austin for long term. hurd just signed his tender, and we got a first and third stuck into roy already. do we put our first pick this year into another wr prospect. and the key word there is prospect. i think he would be  a great pick, but does jerry?

KD I agree I would be shocked if we got Pat White at all. We don't need him at all, we already have 2 QB-WR hybrids. Pat White on a QB level doesn't even deserve to hold Romo's jock strap let alone Kitna' s. The kid wont be a QB for us and he won't be WR. Our biggest hole is at WR We need a WR who can contribute now! davedallasfan is right on the money, we can pick up a solid safetyy in the 3rd or 4th round.

Ahhh yes, Brooks Bollinger, anyone know his age? Again, not worth my time (I have a ton right now, too) to look it up...

I say they see potential in him because they SAID they saw potential in him. He's terrible.

Why use a pick on a WR/QB Project for Wildcat when we have 2 of those, more than capable, on our team already? I'm not sure why people are still stuck on drafting Pat White... Maybe if we hadn't made so many holes in our team during the offseason we could draft useless positions but we actually have NEEDS, and while Pat White would be another Crayton/Stanback anyways we still have far greater need at other positions.

Tough to mock our draft anyways, with a wheeler and dealer like Jerry, we're gonna have to wait and see.

If we take Pat White at all, I'll be surprised, but he'll have to fall pretty far for us to waste a pick on him when Stanback, with some of the same skill sets, was a fourth round pick in '07. I think we paid too highly for him.

Don't know if Robiskie will fall to 51, but if Jerry wants him he'll get 'em. Don't see why not.

yes TD, you are right. take robiskie with the 51 spot. there are other safetys such as terrence moore from troy university that could be had in the 3rd or 4th rnd. 6'1" 217 lbs good coverage skills, fair speed, and has a nose for tackling. a natural at SS. he comes from troy. theodious mccelvin CB came out of that D last year and we all know what d-ware is capable of, who also came from that D program. i like him as i feel the 2nd or 3rd best safety on the board. chung would be great, but if we could get robiskie and still come back and get a kid like moore? why not?

I think that we need another WR too, though. This year's draft class is deep as far as receivers go, and we should take advantage of that. There aren't many safeties out there that are worth much, while there will be some really damn good safeties in next year's draft (Taylor Mays from USC and Tennessee's Taylor Berry come to mind).

I really like Robiskie and I don't se what's not to like. Size, speed, hands, runs routes better than any WR in the draft. Am I missing something???
Im not saying the guy is the biggest, fastest, and has the greatest hands, but he's a well rounded and a solid player. I don't know how you pass him up if he's available at 51. None of the Safety's that will be available at 51 impress me enough to skip over Robiskie.

First of all, nobody sees potential in Brooks Bollinger not even the Vikings who are banking on Frerotte and Jackson. Secondly, we have been looking at White for his potential in a wildcat offense. There would be no intention of handing the pocket passing reins to White.

I don't think Pat White was ever on the radar, and was just something way over-played... Especially here. If we draft a QB at all it will likely be someone we can develop into an ACTUAL QB. We already have project WR/QBs...

Plus somebody sees something in our douche bag third string whose name escapes me and isn't worth looking up. Plus isn't he old? He's not even young right? Anyways they apparently 'see potential' at the Ranch.

Robiskie might be ok but he'd take our top pick, right? We have other needs.

Marcus Vick went to Virginia Tech.

I mean that game-changing speed. I think Robiskie is pretty quick, he's tall, he runs great routes and has great hands. I really think this kid is going to do well in this league.

Guys, off topic..well kinnda... i will say, don't waste your time on Pat White. WV QB'S always have so much hype attached to them. See Marcus Vick. He'll end up another athletic QB that can't play WR. WASTE! we have 2 of our own in Crayton and Stanbach.

But i really would like to know how i can find anything out about Michael Irvins new show and what channel and when it starts. Thanks guys

Who is going to be availible with that speed at pick 51?

i think the cowboys dont want any other teams to know they have interest in Pat White because i think the cowboys want white to fall in the draft and take him and if the 'boys showed interest in white another team may draft him earlier.....robiskie is not the deep threat we need

What's wrong with Robiskie? You better have a good argument.
