Dallas Cowboys Trading For Jay Cutler?

I ask this question because it was asked of me by a coworker today and it turned into a long-winded response that I felt I had to bring to this blog tonight.

The coworker, a sports writer, asked me if I thought the Dallas Cowboys should trade Tony Romo for Jay Cutler, who has asked for a trade in Denver. My answer was swift: No.

Why?

Well, the first thing out of my mouth was  “What has Jay Cutler done for the Denver Broncos?”

Has he won a playoff game? Has he taken the Broncos to a division title? Has he won big games? Is he a mobile quarterback who has thrown for five interceptions, and yet still have the strength to pull out a win? Nope.

Trading Tony Romo for Jay Cutler would make absolutely no sense.

“Aren’t the Cowboys in a transition?” the coworker then asked.

Yeah, they are, I replied. We released Terrell Owens, cut Pacman Jones, signed a safety out of Jacksonville, released safety Roy Williams, put the defense play-calling into the hands of the head coach, will open a new billion-dollar stadium, and left most of a coaching staff intact that will have immense pressure to succeed. They are in a transition, but they don’t need a complete freaking makeover.

Tony Romo may be the next Danny White, but Danny White did win playoff games, and he did take the Cowboys to divisional championships. The Cowboys just didn’t have enough talent to pull out wins in any of those games. But they do now.

Cutler should end up with the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, San Fransisco 49ers or Jacksonville Jaguars: teams that truly need a young quarterback with a ton of upside. The Cowboys have one. And we have to have faith that he will get the job done.

I am not sure I agree with the statement that if Romo were drafted he would get more appreciation but your last sentence, Erik, is really the point.  Both of these men are great quarterbacks.  Romo, however, knows our system and our players.  That gives him the edge even if you think Cutler is better.  Of course, this whole discussion is kind of like arguing which team is better on paper.  It doesn't matter on paper.  The real world is what counts and in the real world the idea of this trade is just perposterous.  Financially, it just doesn't work.  So go ahead and continue to bash your team's quarterback and keep wishing for the greener grass guys.  Romo is your team's leader and maybe if a few more of us actually stood up and supported him completely we wouldn't have to listen to nonsense like the Jessica Simpson stories.  We could always cut him and wind up like Detroit, San Francisco, Minnesota, or Oakland.  We could and likely would spend years and many draft picks trying to reacquire this level of play from that position.  He is our guy and he gets the job done.  Sure he can improve, but so can Brady and Manning.  At least we have stopped looking.  I was really tired of the carousel.

that is true but marshall had better hands then T.O and you know it..marshall also tied or broke T.Os record for most catches in a game against one of the best CBs in the league, (Cromartie), look its really simple everybody likes Cutler better because he was drafted had Romo was drafted even in the late rounds we wouldnt even be having this conversation. They are both great Qbs but Romo gives us a better chance to get to the playoffs

Brandon Marshall is not in TO's league compared to his best years, but now he is considerably better.  Denver has run by committee so you won't see a superstar there, but he also has Tony Scheffler, Daniel Graham, Brandon Stokley, Eddie Royal, and, as a unit, a much better offensive line.  Cutler took the fewest sacks in the league last season and their nine runningbacks averaged more per carry than ours did.  Ya think those two facts alone might help a young quarterback?  Yes we gad Roy Williams on the roster but he was hurt for most of his time as a starter and clearly didn't know the playbook as well as he should have.  Now txhc, compare for me, please, the play calling abilities of Shanny and Jason Garrett.  That is the single biggest factor in this comparison.  I am not a Garrett hater, but Shanny is one of the all time great offensive play callers,  and that is a MUCH bigger deal than having T.O. over Marshall.  (even if you were right that T.O. is currently a more effective receiver)

Oh and Brandon Marshall isn't even in the same league as T.O., not even close.  Name Denver's other weapons besides Marshall.  Thought so.  Romo had Witten, R. Williams, Crayton, Austin, Bennett, Barber, Choice, AND T.O.  Not to mention Felix Jones for the first 4 games of the season!  Denver doesn't have near the firepower that Dallas does.  I give most of their offensive credit to Cutler.  Like I said, if he would have had the weapons we have, he'd have a ring.  Take that to the bank.

ROMO SUCKS!!

You guys are fucking fools for defending this guy. And Erik, I don't know who you think you're talking to, but I've been a Cowboys fan all my life. Doesn't change the fact that Romo sucks.

I forgot to address the whole "choking" aspect.  Every time I hear someone say this I ask them to show me a time when he choked.  The Seattle game might count but give me another where the word choke fits?  You could make a much better argument that Manning is choke.  How many picks has he thrown in playoff games at big moments?  New England and San Diego must love him.  I would just like to hear someone defend this accusation when applied to the Buffalo or Detroit games of 2007.  How about the other Philly game last season?  Let's talk about the Carolina or Atlanta games in 06.  He has handled come from behind wins and shoot outs well from day one.  You can make an argument that he is reckless at times but that is not the same as a choke.

I can't figure out why I am hearing about the Cowboys offensive talent so much in this discussion.  Especially when you talk about depth.  The Broncos had seven runningbacks on IR last season and still managed to have the third ranked offense.  Cutler has plenty of talent.  Cutler took less than one sack per game last year and some of you guys want to scream how unfair the comparison is to his line?  Get real.  What you see from Cutler is Cutler.  He is very good, but so is Romo.  Both have weapons coming out their ears, and both are mobile enough to extend plays.  But financials aside, why would you trade one of these for another?  Even if you believe Cutler is better now, he would have to learn the offense.  So can you actually say that he is that much better?  The numbers say otherwise.

for txhc
ur a retard. isnt any good receiver on any team make any quarterback's stats inflated? that was a fucking dumb point to even bring up. in 07 against the giants yes he threw the pick to end the game for dallas but it came on 4th and 11 with 11 seconds to go and they were down by 4 with no timeouts from about the 30 yard line...so romo and the cowboys were fucked either way. the broncos offense is ridiculous so dont even say that they have no all stars on that team and they throw the ball 85734 times a game and cutler still didnt have as many td's last year as romo did and tony missed 3 games.

and TEXAS it wasnt romos fault everybody important got hurt last year.. im tired of readint romo didnt take us to the SB blah this blah that romo didnt break Mcbrians foot, he didnt innjure Kosier and Holland, he didnt break Barbers Pinky toe, he didnt break Roys arm, he didnt injure Davis neck, he didnt Injure Terrence Newman, nor did he injure Felix Jones and Miles austin, he also didnt take BJs arm strngth, and he also didnt get Stanback and hurd injured, nor did he tell Henry to be so god damn slow, and he also didnt injured himself..he also didnt break Wittens ribs..tony didnt caused us the playoff, injuries did so give him a break, we all saw hoe bad he was gettin hit after Kosier and Holland went down..its not Tonys fault our D cant tackle to save their lives.. and last but not least he didnt take Jason Garrets imagination.

txhc, you are a retard..Jay has somebody who is the same to T.O you might know his name..Marshall and if  you would do your homework the Denver has more yards on the (after the yards runs) ok? and pro-bowl is a voting thing buddy nothing more..neither of those QB has been the NFL MVP so we can compare them by numbers and  your boy Jay shokes all the time..may i remind you that the bolts beat you in the last game of the seaon? see the reason we wont trade romo is because he atleast gives the chance to win one at the playoffs because he can take us there..2 out of the last 3 years he has taken us there thats more then you can say about your boy Jay..and if after T.O we dont have any more xplosive players..unlike Jay who has that speedy rookie.. and you cant compare Marshalls hands to T.O Marshall rarely drops passes T.O just outruns defenses.  So dont come making up xcuses thinking that Jay is better then Romo because that isnt true atleast not yet. Good luck next year maybe you will get a QB that can accually take you to the playoffs.

Oh and thelandryhat, your article is wrong. Cutler is one of the most mobile QBs in the game, nobody is better than him at throwing on the run. Cutler over Romo 100 times out of 100.

Ironman, you are an idiot.  Everything spewing out of your mouth is just ridiculous.  I don't even know where to begin, so I'm not going to go into dissecting every little thing you've said, it would take me all night.  So just listen:

1.  Romo's stats were inflated by T.O.  Romo threw them, but T.O. ran them in.

2.  EVERY playoff game Romo has played in has been his fault that we lost.  2006 against Seattle who fumbled that snap again?  2007 against New York who threw that pick at the end of the game when we were on the game-winning drive?

3.  ROMO lost the Steelers game this year, not the defense.  The defense held them to 13 points, Romo is the one that threw the pick six at the end of the game.

4.  Romo is absolutely SURROUNDED by pro-bowl players, on both sides of the ball.  If Cutler had that kind of security around him he'd win at least a playoff game every year, and we probably would have a championship in the last 3 years too.

Romo sucks, all he does is choke and screw up in key situations.  Every time he throws one deep my heart stops.  He doesn't protect the ball, he fumbles it all the time, and he completely cracks under pressure.  Hell, he's got more picks than Cutler in less games, and the only reason his TD total is so much higher is because of his all-pro offense.  Give me Cutler over Romo any day.  But this deal won't get done, because Jerry Jones is an idiot.  You're all going to see.  Now that T.O. isn't around to blame everything on you're all going to see who the real problem was.  It was the coaching staff and Romo.

Regardless, go Cowboys.

T.E.X.A.S your point is vald to an extent.

We all saw this "team built to go to the Superbowl" flop without Romo. This team was going no where without Romo and thats a fact. When Romo plays bad our team plays terrible. They rarely step up when Romo isn't playing well. So its not solely Romo's fault that we lost those two playoff games.

Cutler is nothing special, nothing Wow's me about him You cant even compare him statistically to Romo or in the winning category. Romo is flat out a better QB.
I know for damn sure I dont want this cry baby Cutler coming to lead this team thats for sure.

No one can blame Cutler for not making it to the playoffs. Tony is good QB but he dont take the job to heart. Put Cutler behind the Dallas Cowboys and you have a new Cutler. Romo has a team built to go to the Superbowl he has no excuses. Cutler has a sorry team so get off his ass about it. Both good QB accept one has started with a good team the other has had to work harder with his team. Cutler for Romo may not be a bad idea knowing that Cutler is a fighter and isnt that the QB that Terry Bradshaw thinks is the better QB in the NFL.

i don't want him. i like the moxie that romo has. he comes from nothin, has no pedigree, and is no premadonna qb. if he learns how to win, and he will, look out

Can you imagine any professional football player seeing Jay Cutler as a leader after his pouting of the past couple of weeks? Cutler has demonstrated just one talent: Whining. I hope Denver trades him to Detroit.

Cutler 15-17 as a starter. Cutler and winning rarely go in the same sentence.

Holy shit- since when is Cutler commmitted to winning? WTF has Cutler accomplished????? PLease will somebody show me how he is committed to winning.  You people are f^cking idiots.

predominatley orange; the broncos blog is talking the cutler/ romo trade also, although i think it's purely speculatio on her part????

I think the bottom line is that the trade will not happen regardless of what we say. I think this subject got beat to death. Im more interested with the Demarcus Ware contract extention if it ever happens...

it don't really matter about the debate with romo/cutler anyway is what i'm tryin to say. cutler is a good talent and was drafted early to be just that. romo was brought up thru freeagency and was more of a parcells discovery, so are we gonna say that because romo was'nt drafted that parcells is an idiot? parcells is the one who benched his own man drew bledsoe, a former #1 overall pick, for romo! i did'nt like it at the time, but it was parcells who saw the talent in romo. so all you romo haters, please refer all comments to ; bill parcells, vice president of personell, miami dolphins......thank you

ironman thanks for the apology . my comment was not directed at you ,i was just being explanitory for clarifacation. & I was not offended . What is a redneck i'm from canada directly across the detroit river from detroit city . Our football programs intermingal in competion often so this is why i appreciate NFL so much compared to more northern parts of canada . Iv'e also been to several pastor conventions in the detroit area & my brother lives in columbus ohio actually not many people in our city even watch or play canadian rules .... Godbless

Daveadallasfan:

my mistake. I forgot Aikman didnt play that game. Yes, his first win was against the Eagles in the divisional round game at Texas Stadium.

i just screwed up royally!!!!! i meant that was his first loss 38-6 sorry, beer guy. his first win did'nt come till next year when they opened the season on monday nite against the champion redskins and went on to 2 consecuative superbowl wins. in that stretch, aikman was 6-0 in playoff appieriences, and the 2 superbowl wins.

texas beer guy, steve buerlien won that game at chicago in 91. aikman was hurt. his first playoff win came the next game against detroit. 38-6 i do believe. that was his first playoff win.

it does'nt matter where cutler was drafted, and the fact that romo was an undrafted free agent???? come on. talent is talent. i'm not one for beatin the hell out of the stats books, but romo's stats are what they are. if you can put up those kind of numbers at this level of the game, than you deserve to play in the nfl. i'm not saying that cutler or romo is better then the other, all i know is romo has done well for a young qb going on his third year. we have put too much on him to win and he choked. we've had a great running game and a great D. that should win games alone, but the whole thing seems always to fall back on romo. well this year i hope romo becomes a game manager and let the running game and D win those close ones. then we'll see what everyone has to say about romo. everyone has always been down on trent dilfer too, but he has a superbowl ring that says he got it done.

Hey Ironman, you want to blame the defense for that game against the Steelers? Really? I guess the defense threw an interception that was returned for the game winning Steeler TD. And as far as you comparing Aikman to Romo, dont go there. It didnt take Aikman more than two playoff trips to get  a win, he got a win in his very first playoff game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. And did you ever once hear Troy Aikman throw an interception and say "oh well, it was just like a punt" like Tony Romo did to descripe a ball that he just threw up for grabs in the game against the Ravens? Or did you ever hear him say "that if losing a football game was the worst thing that ever happend to him then his life was ok?"
All I can say is Romo better get it done this year because all the excuses are gone now. He will be the leader in his huddle, how good of a leader is he? When is the last time he has been the leader of his offense?

i have to walk the dogs so i will close with this...

If Cutler goes tot he Vikings.... watch out!

sorry for calling you a red neck ... haha

i'm watching the boys beet the 9ers on nfl network... and it's making me sad...

The glory days...

i know... off season brings out the worst in all of us...Especially when we didn't make the playoffs the year before...

Next year will be better guys... and the old Romo we all love will be back...

DUMP JESSICA!!!!

ps. the 80's sucked but the late 90's tot he 2000's were worse...

I was a Cowboys fan from my dads stories of the 70's (my mom is a Steelers fan and dad is a Cowboys fan) anyway in the 90's i got so used tot he Cowboys winning i was like football is the best!!!! then all of a sudden they sucked for ten years... my mom was always like.. you should have chose the Steelers. haha...NEVER!

hey its obvious that we are all fans regardless how long but since it was mentioned 1968 for me & we just want to win & pluck the eagles wings etc etc & kick some AFC BUTT and at least get even with those blankin blank steelers & if the addressed roster situation makes romo improve then thats good . Godbless all you cowboy fans.. " we are all just passionate about are cowboys "

honestly 82, i wasn't really directing that at you.. and i didn't want to go where you just went... but since you did i will say this..

I put 100% of this blame on Jerry Jones...

HOWEVER.. him cutting T.O. and eating that money.. really makes me believe that he is changing with the ever changing NFL.. it could be a good thing... and next off season we might have nothing but good things to talk  about on the L-HAT

Romo got a lead on the BEST D in football "steelers" and the D blew in in like 6 minutes...

That is 3 losses that Romo could not help... not counting the 2 losses we got when he was injured and the over time loss to the Cardinals that we lost because he could not throw in overtime after first down due to a broken pinky. That's 6 of our 7 losses out of Romo's hands...

WOW he sucks huh guys...

SHUT UP!

Ironman
Dude get real you cannot compare Aikman to Romo.
Aikman took over a terrible Cowboys team with no talent at all, it took time to build that overall team (but not that long). Romo took over a good team that has done nothing. He will be 29 soon with no playoff wins. Aikman had two superbowls at Romo's age.
Aikman played for a real college team UCLA and was drafted 1-1.
Romo undrafted from a little school.
I was born in 71 and have been a Cowboys fan threw out. I call it how I see it. Coaching and the team owner take some of the blame also in this loosing also. The 80's sucked also

marcotte,

If you weren't a simple Redneck you would understand that my comparison to our D-backs hurting Romo's performance is a "CAUSE AND EFFECT" comparison.

The D gave ROMO an ass whupen against the EAGLES TO CLOSE THE SEASON AND MISS THE PLAYOFFS..

The D gave Romo a loss against Pittsburgh that he fought his ass off to hod on too.. they let the Steelers drive down the field like it was nothing...

The D let 2 Shit backs runs for 90 something yard TD'S each BACK TO BACK  to close Texas stadium with a humiliating loss..

That's what the D gave ROMO...

I played football my whole life... I played QB.. in know what the D does ass hole...  You make no sense... Ill tell you what the D gave ROMO...

our ONLY good corner T-NEW as been out for a period of time every year since we got Romo... so instead of pointing your finger at Romo... Think about how JAY "change my diaper" CUTLER would play without his starting Guard and WITH a broken finger.

DEFENCE stops the other offence from scoring which then allows our offence on to score GET IT !! if  jay had half the time on the field that tony  did ,that the defence gave romo !!! did you even play football ???

Herzog Says:

well if Defense wins championships then why are we even talking about this.  Rome isn’t the soul reason the cowboys have not won in the play-offs
March 17th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
SORRY DUDE BUT YES HE IS THE SOLE REASON WE HAVE NOT WON A PLAYOFF GAME!!! I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE REGULAR SEASON!
PLAYOFF GAMES ROMO HAS CHOKED IN BOTH OF THEM LOOKING LIKE A HIGH SCHOOL QUARTERBACK. Didn't even make the playoffs last year.

I agree 1000% about Defense... However... The reason ROMO has so many picks is because our D-BACKS have sucked so bad since he got here... he has to throw the ball to keep up with the scoring of other teams.. Or run D is always top ten but our pass D is always pitiful...

When they know you have to throw... it's a lot easier to get picks on the QB.

That's why Roy Williams  and Anthony Henry are gone..

Lets sure up our D-Backs and see what happens..

DAMN L-HAT YOU REALLY KNOW HOW TO FIRE US UP!! HAHA

I would not trade Romo for Cutler AND Marshall...

You guys are crazy...
Like everyone has said, it took Troy more than 2 Playoff trips to win. If Romo was the Qb in some small market like the Jaggs... Everyone would be on his balls about how great he is doing. Since he is a Cowboy three straight winning seasons and 2 pro bowl trips isn't good enough... You know what that tells me...  That tells me that MOST of you fucking posers became Cowboys fans when they started winning... I have been a Cowboys fan since the 80's and I loved them when they won and loved them when they lost.. I didn't let wins and losses blind my eye for talent... Go be a Pats fan and get the hell off of our Blog...

ROMO is one of the BEST QB's in the NFL FACT!

Give him some damn time...

That's like Falcons fans saying TRADE MATT RYAN .. HE CHOKED!!!

You are also underestimating how uncomfortable T.O. made Romo in this locker room... Romo didn't wan confrontation in the locker room.. That's why WITTEN had to step up and  say shut up T.O.!

That is the CLEAR AND CUT reason why T.O. is gone... WATCH HOW MUCH BETTER ROMO IS THIS YEAR, WITHOUT THAT PUNK BREATHING DOWN HIS NECK.

Thank all of you "FANS" will be back on here praising him and it makes me sick ...

Romo is the Dallas Cowboys.

Even when we were at the TOP in the 90's, everyone gives to much credit to E.Smith, Aikman, Irvin, Noveck etc etc... You have to give the same credit to the Defense. People like Darren Woodson, Russell Maryland, Jim Jeffcoat, Charles Haley, Leon Lett, Bill Bates, Tony Tolbert,  Ken Norton JR (cannot forget that goalline stop in San fran i think).  Chad Hennings, Brock Marion, Tony Casillias, Dixon edwards, James Washington, Thomas Everett, Robert Jones, Deion Sanders in 95, Godfrey Myles to name a few that made it possible to win those superbowls.

?? some of you guys keep talking about romo's stats ,how did those stats do in EVERY play-off game address those FACTS & TexasBeerPong 99 is completely on  " we don't need cinderella with a bunch of ratio stats " we need a QB that will win when it matters ! & AMEN to 82myman who understands basic football philosophy on DEFENSE !

beerpong99

i ment to say Romo sorry was typing to fast

well if Defense wins championships then why are we even talking about this.  Rome isn't the soul reason the cowboys have not won in the play-offs

Can we knock Cutler for being a Cry-Baby Bitch?

Poor baby found out that a new coach wanted his guy..... Did Cutler not realize that trades actually happen in the NFL..... Now he's got his poor wittle feelings hurt and he don't wanna play for them meanie pants Broncos.....

What a little bitch.
