Detroit Lions To Interview Jason Garrett

by Cowboys

I think Dallas Cowboys fans should get on their knees to pray that the Detroit Lions hire Jason Garrett as their next head coach.

Garrett last year was the hottest coaching prospect in the NFL, which led owner Jerry Jones to make him the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL with a $3 million contract. The Cowboys had one of the best offenses in the league and when 2008 started they looked invincible.

Then, the season actually started and after three games it became clear that the Cowboys weren’t that good. Then they lost to the St. Louis Rams, no GOT CRUSHED, and reality set in.

But Jerry Jones’ love affair with Jason Garrett is an odd story rarely seen in the NFL.

If you remember, Jerry Jones hired Garrett before the Cowboys ever had a head coach. Fans weren’t sure what the heck was going on because when Garrett came on board, he did not have a title. Then, a few weeks later, Jones hired Wade Phillips and conditioned that Garrett becomes the offensive coordinator.

It was a move that even Oakland Raiders Al Davis wouldn’t do. It was bizarre and not very intelligent. Usually, when a head coach is hired, that coach hires his coordinator because he hires people he is familiar with, people he gets along with, and people he trusts and understands. Jason Garrett didn’t know Wade Phillips at all. Wade Phillips didn’t know Jason Garrett at all. The India-style marriage worked fine for that 13-3 season until the playoffs started, and it has been downhill from there.

In today’s press conference, Wade Phillips said that Jason Garrett’s job is safe. But the Detroit Lions could change all of that with a new paycheck. It just has to be more than $3 million. Pray folks, because it would be a good move for both Garrett and the Cowboys.

Increase mather,

Welcome to the landry hat. The Dallas Cowboys will accept you as a fan any time.

Saw my first Lions' game in 1957...Bobby Layne was QB.  Seen many since then......one thing is clear.......no matter who the Lions bring in, they will not win until William Clay Ford is no longer in charge.

Yeah i agree with you Slim but It would be sweet if that were to happen. In all likelyhood Garrett is staying in dallas but he should take the Lions job if they give it to him

Guys, there are too many really good coaches out there this year for Jerry Jones(our GM) to just sit on this. Makes me sick. He should fire Garrett and demote Wade to defensive coordinator if that is what it takes. Either way it is going to be a new system for the offense or there is no "change".

Shannahan will be offered a HC position somewhere, so there's no way he'd take OC for the Cowboys.

If garrett goes to the Lions or any other team for that matter Shannahan should be looked at as offensive coordinator

Here is what needs to happen...In my eyes....
Coaches :
Hire Shanahan to be the head coach.
Move Wade to Defensive Coordinator.... The Defense turned around the day Wade took over.
Keep Jason Garrett AS O-Corrdinator....Let him learn under a coach with proven success as a winner. Let him learn a offense that can score points. A lot of points. There should be no reason at all that we don't score 30-35 pts per game.
Players :
Trade MBIII.... He had an off year and still gained almost 1000 yds. He stock is still UP!!!! We could at least recoup the #1 we gave up to get roy.
Shore up the O-line....Protect Romo
Trade Crayton....Roy Williams is the future.. Let T.O. finish his career as a Cowboy.
DRAFT A SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DRAFT A SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DRAFT A SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DRAFT A SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
                                             A TRUE SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More to come......

hey..shanahan has the rings..and with Romo being the next Elway..Sounds like a combo..

but as i said before, shanahan would be my pick for head coach, or any kind of position. just get him in here. he is the happy medium between the tuna and marshmallow

i wasn't sayin martz is the perfect solution, im just sayin, romo's gettin lit up as it is, and he kept his receivers happy. plus i doubt he'll be highly sought after, so maybe even bring him in as something under garrett or whoever we'll have if he gets no other offers.  we need someone on offense that can give us something other than predictability

Mike Martz is famous for running 5 recievers and getting his QB killed..bad choice..
Holgrem won't go anywhere as an assistant..I think he will take a year off and maybe coach the following season..but he has a great relationship with Jerry so..
Shanahan is a great offensive coach..lousy defenses brought him down..
but..I would as a fan..take Holgren or Shanahan..in a second over Poppin Fresh..

Shanahan is a good, fiery coach but Mike MArtz is a joke

"He's a football player. You can see it, the way he handles himself, the confidence level," Shanahan said. "He reads defenses extremely well, has a great sense of timing. He'll be a great quarterback for a lot of years." - Shanahan on Romo in '07

He likes Romo (even tried recruiting him in '03) and could do wonders with a team with so much talent...

Shanahan would be a great Head Coach OR GM... Keep Romo AND TO...

Is demoting Wade to defensive coordinator too much to ask for or should we just let him go somewhere else?

I know Homgren wouldn't come here likely as a QB coach, but if Jerry was to bring Holmgren to Dallas as Offensive Coordinator, he would probobly have some really good position coaches follow. Something that obvioulsy Wade and Garrett here could not do.

bevoman. I understand your stand with Tony Romo. He is a very talented QB. His instincts are scary as hell, but he is a talented QB. I think with a good QB coach, he could turn it around.

It was Holmgren that pulled a SuperBowl victory out of  Favre right? He could be available here, and might be that guy. That is IF Jason Garrett takes a coaching job elsewhere.

Get Shanahan as Head Coach OR GM! Keep Romo AND TO... Shanahan has a good relationship with the Cowboys and he tried to recruit Romo in '03:

Demote Wade to Defensive Coordinator... or am I asking for too much?

Shanahan is out there, and so is Martz. I always liked Shanahan as a coach, and Martz could be good if Garrett leaves.  He had no shot at success with the 49ers offense, and he proved in STL that he can coach a team with a good rb, and two big time receivers.

You know those plug in things that the teams use to cool down the players..Bill Bates owns the rights..
I know ..I was just having some fun..While always defending Romo..Geez it is a lonely job..lol..
What scares me is leaving it to Wade to bring in a coordinator..He did such a good job with Brian Stewart..
I am on board with anyone who figures out how to fix this offense..besides..of course..getting rid of Romo..

What is Bill Bates doing now? Is he coaching or considering coaching?

Offensive Coordinator is what I was talking about bevoman. All of the other coaches that are out there that I know of are all defensive minded coaches with the exceptions of Brian Billick and Mike Holmgren. Both of these coaches have experience as offensive coordinators. Holmgren also has experience as a QB coach.

Coach Joe..or..Bill Bates for Special teams...anyone but Garrett for O coordinator...but someone who doesn't call a draw play 14 times a game..with some imagination..and who will put Felix in the WildCat...works for me..
Holgrem will be next season..after dough boy fails ..again..

Holmgren or Billick? Mike or Bill? At least both of these guys have had success in the post season.

Possible names popping up are Kevin Gilbride (offensive coordinator?), Eric Mangini (db coach?), Romeo Crennell (special teams coach?)

Who else would be a candidate for Garrett's job if he leaves besides Gilbride? Many of these coaches looking for jobs are defensive coaches. Plus, I really don't see Gilbride leaving the Giants to join the Cowboys either. He will likely be a head coach somewhere.

The only guy I can think of is Mike Holmgren that is an offensive coach, that MIGHT consider coaching here.

Yeah, let's go with a Wade Phillips guy.  After all, Brian Stewart has worked wonders, hasn't he?

Garrett had a bad season.  It's only his 2nd season as O-coordinator and I really don't think we need the offense to spend their offseason learning a new system.  If they suck next season, then Jones can cut him, but it's foolish to hope for a change at OC if the head coach isn't changing.

If you think injury is the cause for this flop you need to take a look in the mirror. Starts at the top with the late season flops every year.  If leadership doesn't take charge and give this group clear direction with success the troops will not follow again. Telling them they are the best in the NFL has gone to their heads. Funny how they overlooked the regular season and it shows....

I think the Lions are wooing Brian Billick.

I'd rather have your guy... We need youth. We need to start fresh. The Cowboys season was hindered by injury more than anything else; well that and a choke-tastic performance on Sunday.

Please let them take him..Please..

Let's start naming Offensive coordinators haha...Garrett is probably at the very top of the list of candidates but there is also a chance he stays on with Dallas. Cleveland and NY JETS need coaches too.
