If I were to come up with one word to describe the first half of the Dallas Cowboys play today against the Washington Redskins, it would be YUCK.
The Cowboys scored on a touchdown to Jason Witten and a field goal to end the half, but the Redskins have dominated the Cowboys, who literally look like the Rams.
The Cowboys have been unable to get a running game started and the receivers have been blanketed by the Redskins secondary. No one is playing particularly poorly on the offense, it is just the Redskins defense came to play so far.
The Cowboys secondary looks like a Division II college team’s secondary, and a really bad Division II team at that. It doesn’t seem like Terence Newman is 100 percent healthy, and maybe he shouldn’t be playing if he isn’t. He’s had problems all game. And once again, why is the defensive scheme seem to give the receivers so much cushion? I don’t get it. Why give up an automatic 5 yards because the secondary is playing off the receiver. Move them up to the line of scrimmage!
The Cowboys need to come out of the gates fast. Only a touchdown down, they need to dominate this second half and take control of the game by running the ball. I will throw a fit if the Cowboys come out in the second half thinking they need to throw bombs–Jason Garrett has done that before.
Come out controlling the ball, by running Marion Barber 2 out of 3 downs. But the biggest adjustments needs to be made in the secondary.
