Brian Westbrook must be held under 100 yards for the Dallas Cowboys to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles tonight.
The problem is, Westbrook can break you running and catching. He is the current NFL player with 20 running and receiving touchdowns. He can beat you both ways, and he has beaten us both ways in the past.
So, how do the Cowboys contain Westbrook? You do it with Zach Thomas.
I would not be surprised if the Cowboys use Thomas as the Westbrook spy. A veteran of the game, Thomas should go wherever Westbrook goes. Thomas is aware of Westbrook’s playmaking skills, despite this being the first time he has played in the rivalry.
“Because he can’t just hurt you just running the ball, it’s receiving, too,” answers Thomas. “He has the full package. Definitely, they try to get the ball in his hands and you can see why because he does a lot of good things with it. We’ve got our hands full with him. Hopefully we slow him down and maintain.”
Thomas was asked if Westbrook reminds him of another versatile running back who played for the Dolphins’ main AFC East rival, the Buffalo Bills. You’ve probably heard of the running back…after all, Thurman Thomas is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“Yeah, a lot like him”, Thomas says of the comparison of Westbrook to Thurman Thomas. “It’s hard to compare because the scheme is a little bit different, but they get the ball in Westbrook’s hands a lot and get him a lot of touches. That’s why he makes a lot of plays. He’s a great player.”
