If Donovan McNabb did not choke in the Super Bowl almost four years ago, he could have been a champion because Terrell Owens tried so hard to make it happen.
Owens was coming back from a serious leg injury after Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams horse tackled him in a game in 2004. Some thought he wouldn’t return, but Owens miracously made it back for the Super Bowl. He had nine catches for 122 yards.
Meanwhile, McNabb threw three interceptions, and he choked (definition: to become too tense or nervous to perform well) during a key drive that could have won the Eagles their first championship in what was at the time 45 years. The Eagles are now nearing half a century since they won a championship. Pathetic.
But Eagles fans think the facts, and Owens stating the them, is throwing McNabb “under the bus.”
Owens says McNabb made him a better receiver. Why is that so awful? I guess what annoys Eagles fans is that Owens also knows that McFlabb would have a hard time admitting Owens made him a better quarterback. I mean come on! It’s the facts. McFlabbs best season was in 2004, when he threw for 31 touchdowns, most to Owens. Sure, Owens rubs it in a little bit, but this is a rivalry:
Owens also suggested their problems were the result of McNabb being insecure about Owens’ popularity surpassing that of the quarterback, saying, “I remember being in that stadium and hearing them chanting my name, and that couldn’t bode well for Donovan.”
The Eagles haven’t done squat in the NFL. The last time they won a championship, there wasn’t even an NFL. There is no irony in why the Cowboys are a force in the NFL and the Eagles have not been since Owens left. You can hate him all you want, but the fact of the matter is Owens is a playmaker.
The Eagles and the fans need to face reality. This Monday night game has far more meaning than any trouble ESPN wants to start. When the players hit the field, and it’s 13 Pro Bowlers facing a bunch of no names and rookies, it will be interesting to see whose got more heart.
You think there will be an upset Monday night, Eagles fans? You think you guys are awesome because you beat the Rams?
Reality bites, my friends. Enjoy the game.
