The Dallas Cowboys didn’t make any incredibly surprising cuts today, but they did make themselves very thin at wide receiver going into the first game of the season.
Maybe most surprising was the cut of sixth round pick Erik Walden, a Middle Tennessee State linebacker whom Dallas Morning News said was one of the most under rated guys in the draft. Oh really?
It will be a mystery who fills the third quarterback slot as the Cowboys also released Richard Bartel. Those who loved undersized Danny Amendola are disappointed to see he did not make the team, leaving with receivers Todd Lowber and Mike Jefferson. Amendola had a lot of chances to shine and he just didn’t do it. The fumble on special teams in the first game was a killer. Also cut was running back Keon Lattimore, which was expected because Tashard Choice easily won that third slot. Remi Ayodele is also gone, which was expected.
Overall, no huge surprises. Believe it or not, football is one week away! Bring it on Cleveland!
UPDATE: The Bucs cut quarterback Chris Sims. I wonder if the Cowboys have already been in contact with him and have him ready to sign, which explains cutting Bartel.

what is up with boldin? any chance
amendola may end up on the practice squad. he has potential and needs to keep working. not everyone that gets released is gone. he’ll have to clear waivers, and then can be re-signed. with everyone else cleaning house at this time, he may be easy to get back. the cowboys were very high on him.
also, there were quite a few big names in the wr pool cut this weekend that could be servicable wideouts for some spot duty for us. look for us to bring in a vet or two. joe horn, travis taylor, sammie parker, ashley lelie……etc. there are some possibilities out there, no doubt. and cheap at this point.
Ashley Lelie played well in Denver. I think what happened with him closely compares to the Keith Davis situation as far as why he didn’t make the roster. Maybe it could happen? Terry Glenn could happen too I guess, but that would be one hell of a desperate manuever. I hope they don’t go after him or Horn. I seen earlier that Reche Caldwell and Roydell Williams were also cut. There are recievers out there with experience. It would be surprising if Jerry didn’t persue at least one of them.
We better sign a free agent receiver and another QB.
