Add Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman to the host of teammates who have bashed safety Roy Williams. This has not been a good off-season for Williams.
During an interview on Fox 4 in Dallas, Newman said Williams once showed coverage skills earlier in his career.
“He’s the same guy, I think, he just sometimes gets kind of a deer in the headlights reaction, some plays. … He had a bad season last year, as far as coverage.”
Although Newman defended Williams by saying he does not think he is a “liability” in the secondary, he also said:
“He’s got to keep his weight down and work in the weight room, getting stronger.”
Newman also talks about Adam “Pacman” Jones and his new contract extension.
Here is the full interview:
Head’s up to DCfanatic for finding this interview.

Your team is falling apart. First post.
our team is fine deadskins guy
4-12 tulip, 4-12.
O NO Newman told the world what the world was already thinking and heard..WERE DOOOMED
stop it tulip…..your nuckin futs!!!
There’s a big difference between some neutral party criticizing Roy and his own teammate criticizing him. I don’t care if he really does suck; you never want to hear his teammates coming out and saying it. When his own team has lost faith in him, he’s become a liability. Even if he plays well, the other members of his team won’t trust him to play well, which will alter THEIR play because of that lack of trust. It’s a bad situation and you all know I’m right.
Guys,
Roy is going to be on a very short leash this year. He is either going to put up and play like the old Roy or he is going to get cut after next year.
I agree David. I think he gets one more shot. If he doesn’t get it done, THEN Dallas looks at their options there. Just so you guys know, there aren’t too many options. The strong safety class next year looks to be a weak draft class. Even worse than this year. The Ranch Report has a forum that just started on all this Roy Williams stuff. There are some quotes there from the staff and so on from the O.T.A.’s.—— By the way, Roy is there before Ken Hamlin. Signed or not, it is all about preparation. Lets hope his deal gets done soon. As far as Roy goes, I have faith that Roy can do better. It looks like he is getting some motivation this year.———http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=112#s=112&f=1786&t=2522226
Yeah David give him one year to prove himself.
Redskins Guy, you’re wrong. You’re wrong, and we are tired of your lip. Get a juice box full of that fruity Washington Douchebag Lighte’ and go play tiddly winks, or whatever it is you do when you’re not over here at the LandryHat. Newman was asked a question, and he answered it. All these guys need to work on certain aspects of their game. That’s no different than any player of any sport at any level. Roy is back to work, and he will improve or he will be gone. On the football field, you can only execute YOUR assignments. The coaching changes impact those assignments. The coaches there, and the assignments have changed. These other guys are going to play out their assignments. NOT Roy’s.— You are saying that everyone on the defense is going to be a liability because Roy is? That makes no sense. Have you ever played football? , because you make absolutely no sense at all. Must be the fruity Washington brew.—– I would like to see Tulip take a pass across the middle on Roy guys. I think that would be some really funny stuff. Roy would blow you apart and you know it. It’s the one on one match-ups with these massive TE’s that give him trouble right? What one on one match-up between a db and one of these guys goes the db’s way ever? You saying Roy is a liability is like me saying Portis is slow, and he’s lost any chance of being productive. It’s biased BS. You know it, and you’re wrong. Wrong like always. The thing is that the new coaching staff is going to have to utilize Roy in the way that he was meant to play (assignments) when he was brought to Dallas. Campo brought Roy to Dallas, so it will make a difference. Lets go there again all knowing football Yoda. Redskins fans know crap about the Cowboys. Make a statement Redskins Guy, but before you do, I can tell you that you are wrong.
Anyway, I found a link, and I tried to post it here earlier, so if it pops up twice that is why. What happened to the text toolbar here on your site LandryHat? Maybe it’s just my computer. I can’t leave a link, so just copy and paste this URL————http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=112#s=112&f=1786&t=2522226
Wow. I think SOMEONE needs a nap. Steam, I’ve played football on a recreational level and many other sports on a competitive (though granted, not-professional)level. If Roy’s teammates (the ones who are on the field with him on defense)are convinced that Roy will not make a play, that WILL affect their own ability to play because they have to compensate and guard against another player’s deficiencies. It’s absurd to suggest otherwise. Troy Aikman often threw passes up high against good coverage because he KNEW that Michael Irvin could outjump the opposition. He knew that at the very least, Irvin would bat it to the ground and prevent an interception. This was true even against good coverage (I seem to remember them getting the better of Darrell Green once or twice; I’d like to think even you guys can admit that he was pretty good). You think Aikman would do that if he didn’t have a wide receiver he could trust? You really think he’d play the same way if he was throwing to Todd Pinkston? Steam YOU sound like you’ve never played sports if you honestly believe what you’re saying.
You might think that it’s different for quarterbacks and wide receivers, but you’d be wrong. The Secondary requires a lot of trust. You have to trust that other players will pick up their people. They SHOULD trust Roy to pick up that big tight end. The reality is, they won’t. They’ll worry about looking foolish because they made their coverage and Roy botched his. Trust and faith in your teammate is essential in the secondary. Oh, and it’s funny that you mention me going against Roy. When I played football, I would often play the position of the big TE pass catcher. Having said that, I’m sure Roy would have utterly destroyed me; there’s a reason he’s making millions and I’m…well…not. But when your best argument is “Gee, I bet Roy would at least be good against the Redskins FANS” you’re getting rather desperate.
Wrong again Redskins Guy, wrong again.
No steam….he’s right. I can see you disagreeing with him being that you have probably never played sports in your life. Its like that in every sport. If you dont trust the guy next to you, you think twice about giving him the ball or letting him go man-to-man on someone.
Steam, you’re just being stubborn and silly, and you’re not even bothering to back up your words with any sort of debate or justification. You can’t tell me that Darrel Green played the say way when he was working with Champ Bailey as he did when he was working with some random backup. If you have faith in your teammate, you will behave differently than if you think they won’t play well. Having a good player next to you makes BOTH players better. But it works both ways. Having a bad player in the secondary makes BOTH players worse because the good player is more limited and cautious.
It’s not a debate. Who the hell are you? Hillary Clinton. And WestCoastSkins, I don’t think Ms. Clinton needs your help…. If what you are saying is that Roy is the WEAK link right now, I agree. I think all 3 of the other starters in the secondary are better NOW than Roy is. I can understand a QB not throwing a pass to a reciever if he is constantly dropping the ball. I can understand a QB throwing the ball Roy’s way too when he is one on one with Shockey, Cooley, or another BIG target, but these db’s are going to play out their assignments. And just so you know, I could give a rats ass about Darrell Green. This post is about Roy Williams. I am a Cowboys fan on what I thought was a Cowboys site. If I wanted to discuss the Redskins, I would be at Riggo’s Rag. BUT, since you are here constantly, and constantly WRONG, I will say the last point you make is accurate (not neccesarily RIGHT). That is not what you said in the first place, but if that is what you meant, that makes sense. Cautious, which they should be in the first place. One of these BIG TE’s coming across the middle should make them all cautious, but I don’t see how that is strictly pinned on Roy Williams. That is a piss poor match-up (defensively speaking). That is why I have been talking about assignments. If you were a defensive coach, would you like one of your db’s one on one with one of these TE’s anyway? I have questioned that…. Roy Williams is not the only one guys. A lot of these guys played poorly last year. Two of those guys are gone now (thank God). Better coaching in the secondary THIS year. That’s another thing I have been saying. I will continue to say that because with the same starters returning, they can make the biggest difference. The radios in the helmet on defense will also help with communication, something Roy has complained about…. Getting better, that’s what it’s all about. I know you Redskins fans don’t like it, but the Cowboys are getting better.
“You can’t tell me that Darrel Green played the say way when he was working with Champ Bailey as he did when he was working with some random backup.” – Actually, I do not think you are correct with that statement.. Two CB’s lining up on opposite sides of the field will have little to no affect on how the RCB plays as opposed to the LCB (such as Green and Bailey). There is a completely different relationship on the field between two corners, and a corner/safety. Also defensive scheme dictates a lot of the “trust” you are talking about.. Zone involves more trust in passing a recieving threat along to the next defender while man to man involves you vs. the helmet in front of you.
Jerry Jones said this “Is absolutely not a make a break year” for Roy
Wade Phillips said “he’s never seen so much bashing of a player since he’s been in Dallas” and that everyone points to the negatives and doesn’t realize “he wasn’t beat deep once” during the season, even though underneath coverage wasn’t stellar, and 115 tackles/14 games = 8.2 tackles a game, which isn’t too shabby for a SS.
A lot of the stories about Newman “ripping” Roy is being taken out of context, but hey, if they can’t make a story from these kinds of interviews, they wouldn’t have jobs. Simply put, he says that Roy understands he didn’t have a good year in coverage, and gets caught like a deer-in-headlights. They neglect to include how Newman states it happens to everyone in a secondary, and you won’t find a DB in the league who was not in that position before. He goes on to say that Roy’s been working to get stronger and keep his weight down, which is what the COACHING STAFF told him to do. Maybe it wasn’t the right place or time to say that, but he answered a question, stated an honest opinion, and also committed numerous statements SUPPORTING Roy such as saying he’s the same guy that had 5 interceptions his rookie year, and was 2nd on the team in tackles (115) to Bradie James, while missing 2 full games during the season.
Also, about Dallas falling apart… why?
1) PACMAN – they gave up nothing for a chance at a stud return man/corner. Who cares if he fails, that’s why Jerry drafted Mike Jenkins 25th in the Draft..
2) ROY – Dave Campo is back in Dallas as the secondary coach, and he initially worked with Roy when he was drafted. Brian Stewart is the “Defensive Coord” but the brain of the D is Wade Phillips. Everything goes through Wade, and if you disagree Wade is a great defensive coach, that’s another debate in itself.
3) T.O. – ??? Why because his contract is up in 12 months. He is under contract, he said its a non-issue, and hasn’t said one thing negative about it
4) Newman – see previous post
5) Ellis – this is year number 3 in a row of his complaining; he whines more than an infant teething, but it has no affect on the team. I’d actually be surprised if an off-season passed where Ellis didn’t complain about something.. He’s upset Spencer might take more snaps, but he should want less snaps, stay fresher during games, and make more of an impact when his 33 year old body isn’t tired and beat up late in the game.
Can we think of anymore reasons why Valley Ranch might explode from inside out without creating non-story stories?
6. I was being snarky with the falling apart comment.
Civilly, I’ll defer to you in the corner-corner relationship versus corner-safety relationship. What you said makes sense.
Steam, you’re so cute when you get angry. If you’re as confident as you claim to be, why are you getting so bent out of shape?
I am really not angry Redskins Guy. If I am angry about anything at all, it is that I can’t get home to enjoy my cold, smooth, and refreshing Miller Lite. I have been here at work with NOTHING to do all day but read and go back and forth with you. That is why you are here right? To get the best of the Cowboys FAN? You keep it clean, and you keep it interesting, so that makes you OK I guess, other than the fact that you are a Redskins fan, you seem like an alright guy. If I wanted to sound as gay as you I guess I would say that you’re pretty cute too…but then again, you aren’t my type Tulip. They would love you in San Francisco though. Have you tried there? If not, before you go, think about this… Snarky, cute, stubborn, silly, desperate, these are all words that you have used to descibe me. All words that one dude shouldn’t say to another dude. That is how these things get taken out of context though you see. Terrance Newman’s point wasn’t the same as the editor of the video in this post made it out to be. Twist things around this way and you get Newman talking Badly about Roy right? Was he talking crap about his team mate? I seen the interview personally on the news in its entirety and I can tell you, I had to laugh when I seen this. Randy Galloway must have been in on this OR a Redskins fan. By the way Redskins Guy, I am not saying you are gay. I am just trying to show you how far things can be taken out of context. Did you do this?
I didn’t actually see the interview. I guess I put too much faith in LandryHat when they made the title of the article “Terrance Newman Joins Roy Williams BASH Festival.” I’m sorry for trusting Dan to be accurate and factual. It won’t happen again.
Good comeback on the whole descriptions I use thang. I’d be worried about being perceived as gay if I didn’t know Ian was out there posting Donovan McPorn on his Eagles site.
And for the record, I don’t really monitor the NFC East sites to “Get the best” out of Cowboys fans. I love the NFL and I love the NFC East. I love talking football. I love keeping track of the teams I love and debating about them. I’m not really out to “win” but to have fun and interesting debates. I welcome all of you to come and do the same at Riggo’s Rag and I thank those of you who have come to accept me(I won’t say like; let’s not go crazy here) and to allow me to join in on discussions.
Screw you Guy. I posted the video limpy. You can have your own take on it. That was my take. No player is going to outright criticize another teammate unless there is hatred. No one hates Roy. But this is as close to criticism as you are going to get from a teammate. So, in my opinion, Newman joined the ranks of Williams bashers with what he said in the interview. He covered his tracks well, but he still wasn’t all high on Roy. You want to talk about accuracy, fool?
