Will Marion Barber Hold Out From Camp?
I had a feeling this might happen, and I just hope I am reading too much into this one, but Marion Barber is not working out at any Dallas Cowboys facilities for the offseason programs. Barber, instead, is working out in Miami.
The two sides have made no progress in a longterm contract, and he has not yet signed his tender for $2.56 million. Is there reason to be concerned? Not if Barber thinks clearly and ignores his agent a little bit.
Drafting two running backs in the first four rounds is not foreshadowing to a Barber-less Cowboys future. We lost Julius Jones and Tyson Thompson to free agency. The Cowboys had to draft running backs. We may have just gotten lucky with whom they selected. Certainly, the position is upgraded. Wasn’t that one of the goals?
But what is Barber thinking about all of this? Does he feel slighted because he’s not the lone back in Big D? Does he feel slighted that the Cowboys are not offering him the same money that LT gets? Is his agent serious? Can any NFL team defeat the antics of Drew Rosenhaus?
Barber needs to show up on time once the real camp begins. He needs to show up, in shape, and ready to play. He’ll get his longterm deal.

Looks like posturing by his agent, trying to get Dallas to increase their offer. He cannot play for any other team and it would be risky to accept the one year deal. My guess is barber will sign an offer better than the initial offer but still much less than what the agent is trying to get.
May 14th, 2008 at 9:07 pmhe has to sign…its not like he can go to another team. Im not worried about it….yet.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:07 amI love Barber but he needs to get his head out of his ass. He isnt going to get money nor should he like any of the premier backs. He is a system back and should be paid like one. If not then do the one year deal and im sure we can find if we have not found already in Choice a back to do dual duty with Felix. But id rather save the money for Ware and Newman. Now dont get me wrong, if Barber was an LT or even Peterson for that matter I would say pay him the big bucks but he is not. And RB is the position you can have guys drafted in the lower rounds be good if not great.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:44 ami really dont think it was barbers idea to hold out from camp..his agent is tryin to get him more money and cant you blame him? i mean barber’s jersey sold out early in the season..i bought my wifes jersey in octorber and didnt get it till late in december..i would be ok wt the money he is askin if he had LTs speed but he doesnt..he has heart and he can sure run over people..people are scared of gettin on his way..i will be really mad if he doesnt sign a long term contract
May 15th, 2008 at 6:57 amErik I will to but I dont want to hurt the team by giving him money he dosent deserve yet. He hasnt even been a starter for a whole year. Its like Romo’s situation a year ago. They didnt want to pay him money after he came off the bench and started the last 10 games or so until they saw he coud do it all of the time this year. If Barber goes out this season and gets 1500 yards and 20 plus TD’s then sign him long term. If he dosent then he gets paid for what he produces and if he doesnt like it let him walk. You cant put one guy ahead of the team right now when they have a lot of young great players. Especially at his position where you can find RB’s to do a good job anywhere. On the other hand you have an absoloute stud in Ware that will need to be paid big money. He is in a premier position that is very hard to find game changing players….Same with Newman…
May 15th, 2008 at 7:14 amThe problem is not Barber….it’s always Drew Rosenhaus when it comes down this types of situations.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:40 am9, Sorry bro but I disagree. Yes the agents are greedy assholes but the player can still say ill sign for 30 or 40 million and tell the agent to f off…
May 15th, 2008 at 11:12 amcall me crazy but i could part ways with Barber if he won’t take a "team player" type contract and wants a "me me me" contract… i could say bye bye would suck but seriously look at felix jones resume. freshman year at Ark. he was 2nd on depth chart and mcfadden was 3. his Sop and Jr. season he had 1000 yards in a duo like barber in ncaa. AND Choice from Ga Tech is the tough little guy we all wanted jj to be. barber wont sit out the season but if he performs he will get the contract like tony romo did. he wants LT money in first 8 games get 100 yards and a td in each at least. show your worth it.
May 15th, 2008 at 11:17 amFellas let me give you my opinion..for FREE!( for a limited time, only on http://www.thelandryhat.com) I cant blame Barber even if it is his idea to request more money. This is a guy who runs harder than anyone in the NFL. This is a guy who puts his hole body at maximum risk on every play regardless. This is a guy who as a backup running back is second to only LT in total TD’s. This is a guy who on his first start rushed for over 100 yards in the first half agianst the best Defensive front last year. Yea he fell off in the second half but he had not been conditioned to be the starting back yet and our passing attacked was slacking. This is a guy who every year gets Better and Better. This is a guy who was drafted low and worked his ass off to get the starting job in Dallas and damn right diserves it, and you guys are telling me he doesnt diserve top running back money? Are you telling me Barber isnt in the top five RB from last year? The only argument I agree with is that we need to save some money for Ware and Newman(who is getting old) but other than that. Barber does diserve big money not a LT contract but a Barber contract. If we got rid of him then wed be starting all over!! yea our draft picks were good in college but look at reggie bush. We drafted two guys that darren mcfadden beat out for the job. In conclusion i think we sholud give barber a long term deal with decent money, Even if Jones or Choice blew up you cant go wrong having a Barbarian for the redzone. Ill take your comments
May 15th, 2008 at 3:05 pmFree Marion Barber! Free Marion Barber! Give him the money he’s due! Think of the children!!!
May 15th, 2008 at 3:17 pmI know it is hard to afford the dollar menu with just 30 million. Need that extra ten so you can get the happy meal and a toy
May 15th, 2008 at 3:57 pmTD,You can argue Troy Hambrick did a lot of the same things when he was backing up emmitt. And when it came to him having the show what happened. EXACTLY…..I could go on and on where guys got big contracts after a few flashes in games they started only to end up as a bust..Now I think Barber will be great with Jones but he is a dual role back and always will be…
May 15th, 2008 at 4:04 pmDavid I agree its gonna be a dual back system. But No you CAN’T argue that Troy Hambrick did the same things that Barber has done. To even compare the two is ridiculous. Troy hambrick in his total carrear only had 10 total touchdowns in 5 years compared to Barbers 33 in three years. Hambrick only rushed for 2179yds in five years on 536 attempts. Barber 477attempts has rushed for 2,167yds. So on 59 more attempts Hambrick only rushed for 12 more yards than Barber.Bottom line Barber rushed for 129 yards and a td on his first start, unless im missing somthing I thought that was pretty good.
May 15th, 2008 at 4:32 pmI just wish there was that happy median…if its true he wants 50 but jerry wants to give him 30 y don’t they just meet at 40million…I believe thats what willis mcgahee got with baltimore and I would take the barbarian over willis anyday
May 15th, 2008 at 4:48 pmTD,I dont care how you slice it they are similiar numbers, but the main thing is the fans all wanted Hambrick to take over for Emmitt and look what happened. All I am saying is Barber has played awesome and deserves a nice contract. But he is insane if he thinks he deserves LT money. Like I said earlier his situation is similar to Romo’s last year. If Barber has a 1500 yard 20 plus TD season next year then you pay him more like an LT, still not as much but more. If not then pay him what he played for and call it a day. But personally I do not want to see money thrown his way that could be kept for Ware and Newman as well as other potential free agents..RB’s are a dime a dozen when you have other great players around them unless they are special like LT.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:38 amAre you drunk the numbers are in rushing yards are the same but hambrick had 2 more years than Barber. Barber has scored 13 more touchdowns your tellin me thats similar??? No more jack daniels for you my friend. I agree about saving money for Ware and kinda Newman becasue hes gettin old and we drafter two decent corners. BUt to say tht barber fallas into the dime a dozen category is crazy….WHOS LIKE BARBER????? ill wait for your answer. Dont get confused im not sayin he needs an LT contract but he needs a decent contract cuse barber is proven and is good no matter how you slice it.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:10 pmTD,Look Hambrick didnt even play that much at all his first couple of years. Yes Barber is a way better back and has more touchdowns but ill I will continue to say is that your going to shell out 40 plus million for a guy that one has had on 20 plus carry game and start. Id like to see him go a season of 1500 yards and 20 td’s before giving him that kind of money. Two he is a system back and your going to pay him 40 million plus as a system back. And bro I love how Barber runs the ball but you are getting enamored with that and not seeing the big picture. I am not paying any RB that kind of money unless he can take it to the house from anywhere on the field. Barber is not that. I still love him and want him but not at those prices. Not when its been proven you can get quality backs in the middle rounds of the draft time and time again..
May 16th, 2008 at 2:30 pmIm not saying that becasue Barber is diffrent that he should get paid alot. And Hambrick not playing as much doesnt make any diffrence considering he had more carries. And i have never once said that Barber should get an LT contract or 40 milion. Alls im sayin is you cant blame him if it is him that wants more money. He worked his ass off and to pay a player based on the fact tht he can MAYBE be replaced is Bullshit. I know what the big picture is, I keep sayin it, so stop sayin stuff like i dont get the big picture and we gotta pay other players becasue i agree with that on every post. But we gotta pay Barber if he wants more than 35mill i cant blame him but logically we cant fork that out. That was my point..again
May 16th, 2008 at 6:07 pmUltimately, the salary cap is what is in the way here. If Jerry could pay him what he is asking, he likely would already have it. This could be something we hear about for a while. I don’t think he is worth L.T. money, but Javon Walker wasn’t worth $55 million either now was he. Rosenhaus is desperate for his share, but Barber can pull the plug when it goes too far yea. I think Barber will end up getting a middle of the road contract, because in the end no one will pay him what he is demanding.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:04 pmThis is why T.O. isn’t standing in the way right now. Rosenhaus already has his hands full with Barber. T.O. WILL be next. I don’t care what he says. T.O. could get another 3 yr. contract, but this time it will be more than $25 million. The salary cap could get in the way somewhere real quick!
May 16th, 2008 at 9:08 pmTDCowboys has a hard-on for Barber. Just see previous blogs about him.
May 17th, 2008 at 7:11 amWESTCOASTFORESKINS….yea so hes one of my favorite players. And unlike anyone on the Skins he’s actually good. In fact any respected analyst or fan of the game will tell you he’s better than any player on your team. O and please stop stalking me and my blogs everyone is starting to realize that you a real pillowbiter
