Terrence Wheatley? Who Is This Guy?
Terrence Wheatley is a cornerback from the University of Colorado. In the past week or so his name has moved up in the draft, but he is still projected at NFL Draft Scout as a 6th round pick. So why in the heck are folks talking about him as a possible first or second round pick?
He’s rated 23rd out of more than 200 cornerbacks available in the draft. Maybe his quick 40 time, 4.37, opened some eyes.
He’s not really tall, and he isn’t very big. Wheatley is injury prone and his play was limited last season. However, he is known for his strong cover skills with great instincts. He can also return kicks. He did not set any records as a defensive player for Colorado, so keep that in mind.
Did anyone watch the Senior Bowl? Oklahoma State wide receiver Adarius Bowman cleaned his damn clock by overpowering him at the line of scrimmage. Bowman’s routes confused Wheatley and he looked pretty average during that game.
What has changed since that game? His 4.37 second 40 time came at the combines. If people are measuring prospects on 40 times alone, then they have a lot to learn about football and the mechanics of the game. Rarely do these combine results translate into any form of accuracy on draft day when we are talking about the middle of the pack.
Here is a clip I found of Wheatley on youtube. You will sure see his speed, but keep in mind this is a collection of his best plays, and we won’t see some questionable aspects of his game that I pointed out. I won’t doubt he could be good, but I certainly would be shocked if the Dallas Cowboys look at him any time before the 3rd round.

Thanks Landry, good post. I heard some about him but not this aspect. He might be a project CB in 6th or 7th.
