Cowboys Get Closer to Javon Walker Deal

Posted by: thelandryhat

Although I don’t subscribe to the RanchReport because it is a bit cost prohibitive, there is an insider post that leads fans to believe that the Dallas Cowboys are close to reaching a deal with wide out Javon Walker.

If anyone has a subscription to the site, let me know, and post the story here.

Personally, Walker, if signed at a reasonable salary with incentives, could be a steal. This move would also signal the end of Terry Glenn. Walker is often injured and hasn’t had consistency in 4 years. He is from Texas though. He also is good friends with Terrell Owens. Match made in heaven? It could be.

Meanwhile, another corner is off the table former Patriot Randall Gay signed with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints addressed a true need in free agency. When will the Cowboys?

How much time is left on Glenn’s contract? If Walker comes to Dallas would we have a shot at freeing up some cap space with Terry Glenn?

  2. 2. OCTOPUS Says:

Why would it be the end of T.G.  I know they both wanna start.

  3. 3. thelandryhat Says:

Not much. He is signed to 2010.

    2008 1,740.000.00
    2009 2,000,000.00
    2010 4,950,000.00

The Ranch Report just says that they are getting close to seeing what they will offer him, but about 6 more teams are interested in him. I can’t see spending and losing cap space on him. He’s not healthy. Why not just take what the draft has to offer and give Terry Glenn another year?

  5. 5. steamroller78 Says:

Where can I find contract information on each player for Dallas as you have listed for Terry Glenn. It would be interesting to see the #’s for the other guys we have talked about in trade to Atlanta, and DeAngelo Hall.

  6. 6. steamroller78 Says:

My thoughts on this are that Jerry is going to sign Javon Walker to 3 or 4 year deal and structure his contract much like Terry Glenn’s contract and then cut Glenn to pick the cap space back up. Javon Walker is a close friend of T.O. and if T.O. wants him in Dallas it is just Jerry’s way to get T.O. to sign a better structured contract extension that will help us on the cap this year. If he then is able to cut Glenn he will have gained even more space against the cap. Javon Walker has scheduled a meeting with the Cowboys this week according to the Ranch Report, but I am expecting to hear about T.O.’s contract extension before this goes down. Expect that to be a headline on the Dallas Cowboys website this week.

  7. 7. WAYNE Says:

I think it will be Javon Walker And T.G . Jerry already said he expects glenn to return to full forn and if Walker is 100 % hes a steal . I think the big splash will be McFadden And Deanglo Hall on draft day .

  8. 8. davedallasfan Says:

wayne i like your thinking provided walker IS 100%. but STM78 is right. it’s all about cap $. i just can’t see us signing anyone else till we see about the tendered situation with barber. STM78’s take on glenn is right. he’s got to be one of the top candidates to be released for the biggest cap boost. so we know what he will make over the next 3 years, will he play 3 years? no. so is it more cap friendly to let him play 1 more year and he retires then, or cut him and then take a cap hit for the remainder of his contract? i’m not sure how all the extented pro-rated contracts work in todays NFL, but i’m sure jerry’s left himself an out here? walker would be a good move; 1 he’s healthy 2 to appease owens 3 to be possibly able to fill glenns role and free up cap space 4 provided they can safely and economically cut glenn without a longterm cap hit. nice points made by you guys. this is very interesting disscusion. and yes i do believe the big surprise is mcfadden, hell jerry may have trade in place already based on the outcome of the first few picks in the draft. who knows, but thats what these blogs are about for us fans; speculation

  9. 9. davedallasfan Says:

it’s easy to go out there and sign players, but the difficult thing is too determine who’s gotta be cut, who would be wise to trade, and who over the longterm of his contract is worth keeping. like STM78 said it would be interesting to see the contracts and money we have in some of these players that were mentioned in possible trade rumors. even when you cut or trade someone, there still maybe contract implications for the team he leaves. so cutting ain’t always the answer, but we gotta get cap space somewhere. we can’t all be like the skins and be over the salary cap and make piss poor freeagent moves

  10. 10. david Says:

Guys,I think both Walker and Glenn are risks this year.  If they do sign walker it better be an incentive laden deal like Tank Williams.  He has not done anything the last couple of years and needs to prove himself both health wise and skill wise.   Glenn I think is done or close to done.  He was no help at the end of the year and I honestly think he hurt us in both games.  Lastly I have not been in favor of trading up for Dmac.  But if we can get Hall in that package and it only uses up the 2 1st rounders and say a Carpenter or Akin then i’m all for it.  But if its more costly then that i’d be wary.

  11. 11. WAYNE Says:

I believe Warrick Dunn is also a possibility . I think in the next week you’ll see Jones restructure some contracts and get enough cap money to do some things . I believe walker is not going to be trouble because he never really has been and I think if you think he is you dont know much about his situation. The reason he was a problem in greenbay is because they don’t pay there players (Walker ) he blew his knee out and then was traded to denver and then watching his freind die in his arms . sometimes everyone lookes for charchater issues when they really don’t exist . This is all based on him staying healthy. Terry Glenn is a risk but I think everyone has confidence in him coming back and I believe hell be the player he used to be .If dallas signs dunn dallas will probley stay were they are at in the draft . #22 – Antonio Rodgers – Cromartie/CB/Tennessee State#28 – Desean Jackson – WR/ California

  12. 12. david Says:

Wayne,For one, I am saying I think Walker is a risk due to his health.  He has not shown anything in over 2 years.  Dunn I think is just that done.  I love the guy but I think Dallas could draft a better back in the second or third round.  And I would love to draft Antonio Rodgers-Cromartie but he already is a pro bowl player for the Chargers.  I would however take Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who will be in the draft but I honestly do not think he will be available by the time our number 22 rolls around.  And honestly I am from the bay areaq and am not impressed by Jackson from Cal.  Yes he is fast but I dont think he has the heart to play in the NFL.  He was no where to be found in to many games this year for Cal.

  13. 13. John A. Says:

Wayne there is no way thats happening…. i wouldLOVE both Domnique R-C (cousin of Antonio- damn i would like to have those genes..) and desean jackson, who is my favorite WR alongside sweed and kelley, but jackson will be an impact not only in WR but also as an immediate impact on special teams returning a la devon hester, so he will go before pick 28… i mean i hope youre right, because i would love to have both of those guys, i just dont think wel get them…. maybe cromartie because a lot of people arent picking him as the #1 or #2 corner, i dont understand why, i think he is easily the #2 best corner behing my favorite, McKelvin, who unfortunately we have no real shot at getting… i hope youre right but i dont think were gonna get either of those guys…. desean jackson is ridiculous, he is going to be someone everyone is talking about in a few years, if he goes all the way down to 28 that would be a steal for the boys’ and stupid for jj not to take him if the opportunity is there

  14. 14. John A. Says:

Also, for corners, i dont understand why everyone loves Aqib Talib so much, i mean i think hes great, but i dont think hes the best corner, he looks very awkward when he runs, its not effortless like a cromartie, and it isnt intense and physical like mckelvin, its just awkward, like almost where im nervous the guy is gonna injure himself, hes definately not my favorite corner at all, i dont get all the hype surrounding talib, a lot of these espn guys have him going like 11 or 12, which i think is crazy, i think he is only a late 1st or early 2nd round material, ha not that thats a bad thing im just saying hes not top 2 or 3 corners

  15. 15. John A. Says:

david i think desean is going to be real good in a few years, i dont know why, i agree with you his cal tapes arent real impressive, but he won me over with the combine, hes very small but who cares, its not that hes fast its that hes fast without looking like hes even trying, i think hel be really good down the road

  16. 16. steamroller78 Says:

I really believe the 2 first round picks will be traded up. And with who they will get will come a cost. Don’t look for Jerry to be too interested in CB’s in the first round of the draft. The next pick will be #59 unless a trade is made to include Atlanta’s second and/or third round picks also.—-Akin Aydole

  17. 17. davedallasfan Says:

i’m tending to side with david on this walker deal. granted glenn for the most part is 1 year at best and done after that. even played sparingly, the stress to that knee will be unbarable. so we think walker is going to be any better with the same injury? my experience with the knee is no. age may not be a factor based on the stress level he faces as a wr in the NFL. i think david is right for what we’re looking at talent wise with some of these free agents, we could get in the 2nd-3rd rnds

  18. 18. david Says:

I think he can be a very good return guy John but thats about it.  Maybe a decent slot receiver, but I just do not think he is worth a 1st round pick.

  19. 19. davedallasfan Says:

STM78 is right, if jerry says it’s a surprise, it’ll be a dussy, and it”ll include our 2 1st rnds because they are at the bottom of the round and still will be pricey to sign. he wants mcfadd. face it. so lets play the trump card. and akin maybe one of the logical players to be traded because i believe the cap cost is more for akin than that of carpenter. and now we have thomas-(cheap). akin is familiar with smith the falcons coach, so it could be? and if these hall rumors somehow fit in, atlanta seems the logical trading partner? this deion sanders interveiw with hall just seems to come back to me and deion does stay in contact with jerry to get info for the NFL network spot that he has. i do believe there’s something to this and that’s why as STM78 says he’ll wait till the 2nd or 3rd to get corner depth. we need depth, do we NEED a starter with newman and henry at the corners? if hall is there, henry can be moved around and corner problems now look like a strength? just a thought

  20. 20. david Says:

Guys,Dont underestimate the need we have at cornerback.  It is huge.  Weahter we get Hall in a trade or we draft one in the 1st or 2nd round.  We need a CB to play the outside opposite of Henry in the 3 receiver sets which they see often.  Newman always covers the slot WR because he is our best man to man cover guy and takes the slot WR all over the field usually.  We need a quality 3rd corner period.

  21. 21. John A. Says:

id rather get a corner in the 1st round than have Hall come from the falcons…

  22. 22. david Says:

John,I agree unless we do a package trade that includes Dmac.

  23. 23. davedallasfan Says:

oh i agree 100% we need corners, corners, and then corners. but it is more of a depth perspective than a starter and new man was moved into the slot in packages. but his home is at the corner. halls home could be the other corner. and henry has been rumored to be tried some at saftey. but by all means draft more corners whether hall is here or not. we need that. my take on hall is that he’s a proven veteran. 4 years in and seasoned well. speed, lockdown abilities, and a swagger that you need on that island position. hell i did’nt like deion either but he was the best at covering even though he lacked at tackeling. in a new inviorment and new challenge with a contender you just  know what hall can bring. if he has the desire to be out of atlanta, i just see him bringing a burn for us in dallas. ball players mature, and that punkass shit he came into the league with, i think, is gone when he realizes how short that time window is and how important those oportunities to go down in history as a superbowl corner. he gets that chance here in dallas, and i think he stives in it. deion sanders has a lot of influence on this young man ready to turn the corner as a seasoned pro. hall could be stunning. my opinion

  24. 24. davedallasfan Says:

well, there it is boys, atlanta just cut dunn. he’s now on the free market, and as always the cowboys were one of the teams considered interested in looking at his services. espn. yeah. the only reason i listen to them is because of john clayton and mortenson. nfl people like to tell these guys stuff because they know these guys will spread this like a brush fire on a dry day. clayton was just on at about 11:45 central. said dunn has a little tread left on the tires for the right team. who???

  25. 25. david Says:

Well as much as I love Dunne for what he has done in his career both on and off the field, I still do not think we need to sign him here.  I’d rather take a back in the 2nd or 3rd round unless we trade up for Dmac.

  26. 26. steamroller78 Says:

If this is true then that just about takes care of all positions to be addressed with the exception of the most important–CB. If Jerry brings in Walker and Dunn, where does that put Barber in the mix? Trade Bait? Neither one of these guys are Jerry’s surprise on offense. Jerry wants D Mac.

  27. 27. david Says:

I agree with steam,  Jerry wants Dmac.  The only way I am on borad with that is if he gets Hall in the package in a trade with Atlanta.  Otherwise we are screwed this year with the lack of CB help.  We can get another corner in the 2nd or 3rd round but we need Hall if we go after Dmac.  No other scenario will help us get over the top.

  28. 28. davedallasfan Says:

yes jerry wants mcfadd. walker, i’m not sold the cowboys will sign him. the rb situation would be better served in the draft than with dunn, but, if he trades up to get mcfadd, then you don’t need dunn for sure. even a 2nd round back has more than dunn. but jerry wants the "splash" on offence. that has got to be an indication he takes a rb in the 1st whether he moves up for mcfadd or takes one with 22 or 28. i see us taking a back some where. to me adding depth at rb in the draft is more important than the wr spot because of all the young guys we already have. but DB—–if he moves for mcfadd, it’ll cost both #1s so we gotta get a db with the pick in the 2nd. or as i was saying before, hope we get hall in that deal. just MY opinion

  29. 29. davedallasfan Says:

good post guys, love your imput. it’s fun to speculate with good cowboy fans

  30. 30. david Says:

Hall is a must if we trade up for Dmac.  It wont be worth it otherwise.  We will be short on corners and I would not want to put trust in our scouting staff to draft a corner in the 2nd or 3rd round that is going to have to step up right away and contribute with a lot of pressure on him.

  31. 31. TDCowboys Says:

Hall wants out of Atlanta fellas he said there no chance tathe willplay for them. Hell be a FA next year and Atlanta will get nothing for him unles they trade. Atlanta is going to trade him to whoever gives them the best offer. If Dallas gives them the best offer Atlanta wil make sure Hall goes. Which shouldnt be a factor regarding Halls comments towards playing for Dallas.

  32. 32. david Says:

ok we can finally put the moss to dallas craziness to bed.  he and the pats are finalizing a 3 year deal.  now lets not talk about the idiot again.

  33. 33. TDCowboys Says:

Well espn reprts Dallas is intrested in Dunn which tells me two things either The Mcfadden n Hall rumour with atlanta is flimsy or Dallas is using this as a cover to get into closer talks with Atlanta. what you guys think?

  34. 34. Alan Says:

Why would this get Dallas in closer talks with Atlanta if Dunn were released, they don’t need to talk with Atlanta to get him anymore.

  35. 35. Alan Says:

Or maybe i missed your point?

  36. 36. Alan Says:

I can see where going through the motions of pursuing Dunn might deflect attention from a possible deal with Atlanta, but I think that while Art Blank and JJ might discuss a possible move in the draft they can’t make any deals until we know that DMAC is still on the board at #3. And it definitely won’t be made public until then if one is made conditionally.

  37. 37. david Says:

So fellow Boys fans that are hoping this deal with Atlanta works out.  The one problem I see in this deal is if Ryan is still on the board for Atlanta.  They can not pass on him, their fans would revolt.  They need a positive image and if Ryan was there he would be it.

  38. 38. david Says:

Alan,I think Dmac is on the borad until at least the Raiders at 4.

  39. 39. TDCowboys Says:

Alan my point in saying that Dallas could use Dunn as a cover up to talk to atlanta about hese trade talks. Meaning we have to watch out for Parcells in these trade talks. Yes Parcells used to be our coach but hes a buisness guy with a first round pic. I know everyone thinks theyll draft a linemen but Ronnie Brown is injury prone and Ricky Willams loves pot. So Mcfadden is more than likley on his list. Its just an idea its not  fact

  40. 40. david Says:

TD,Parcells has never and will never draft a RB this high…

  41. 41. TDCowboys Says:

Did he tell you he wouldnt? Parcells had never lost a game where he had a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter either, things chang its a New NFL. David its a good point though.

  42. 42. steamroller78 Says:

Parcells is definately going to be hard to deal with, but I don’t see him picking a RB either unless he is going to take D Mac just to see what he can get from Jerry with him. If Jerry has to cough up players instead of picks this whole deal could cave in. Because like has been said more than once, Jerry will not throw it all away. He knows how close we are to winning the big one. Atlanta will be a lot easier to deal with and St.Loius will not take a RB. Oakland will be hard to deal with also. Al Davis wants more to go with his #1 from last year,so I would have to believe he wants the best RB also. Parcells will not take the chance to screw Jerry like this though in my opinion, just because he knows that Jerry will just laugh and move on. So with the whole cost factor of choosing a #1, he will take a Offensive or Defensive lineman. This deal with Atlanta is legit guys. As for Walker, I could see Jerry bringing him  here only in an attempt to keep T.O. happy and use that moment to give T.O. a structured contract extension that would help us with the cap problem this year. Warrick Dunn…? If he is signed, I am confused and this is why. I like tens of thousands of other season ticket holders am waiting impatiently to see what these tickets at the new stadium will cost.  If they are too high I will have to lose one of my 3 seats. There are many more just like me.  If Jerry can’t come through better than Warrick Dunn and Javon Walker in this whole deal I would really be wandering what the hell Jerry is thinking. I also would have to look at that as a ? as if maybe he is looking to trade Barber. And if Walker comes I am almost certain T.G. goes. All that leads to this, Warrick Dunn is not going to fill those seats. Only something new, fresh, and exciting is going to fill them up with the pricetag Jerry needs. Around 70,ooo seats left to fill and only about 10,ooo on the waiting list after the remainder of the season ticket holders take what they can afford. D MAC or a deep hole for Jerry to crawl out of guys. Jerry Jones has got to know Warrick Dunn isn’t the answer right? D Mac would get a lot more people on that waiting list.

  43. 43. steamroller78 Says:

The latest from the Ranch Report says that Dallas and Houston are interested in Warrick Dunn. Houston will offer him the moon if they paid 20 mil for Reeves. Thats good, then we don’t have to worry about Jerry bringing him to Dallas and losing anyone else off the roster to make up the cap space that would be lost in signing him. If Houston keeps giving all their money away they might be giving their draft picks away for very little trade eh. Just another thought.

  44. 44. davedallasfan Says:

dunn wants to be closer to what he calls home. that puts him back in tampa. tampa at one point had almost 40mil to work with and  gruden still relents the fact they let dunn go the first time. he’ll sign him, get a couple good years from a seasoned vet and let him retire a buc, maybe the first buc in the hall of fame???? good fit, win-win

  45. 45. mike Says:

Looks like Javon Walker is GONE!!! Raiders, the worst franchise in the NFL right now, signed him to a 6 yr/$55 millio deal!?!?!  Davis needs to be committed!!!   He just   paid a banged up, washed up WR to more money then Randy Moss just got!!!  Looks like a CB and WR in round one for us.  Felix shoud be out because theres just too muc RB depth so we can wait until the 2nd round, especially if we sign Dunn.

  46. 46. Redskins Guy Says:

Thank God he’s not in the NFC East.  I think we’re all better off without him.  He was too risky to want on your own team, but still capable of producing a monster week now and again, just when your team was set to play him.  Let him cash out in Raiderville where he won’t give any of us heartache.

  47. 47. Jamie Zaborowski Says:

You post certainly was one of the finest points of my Sunday. I was on Askjeeve researching something completely unrelated when the title captured my attention. I am delighted I spent the time to read your post! Feel free read my sports articles should you get some free time!
