Marcus Spears Not On The Market. Is Bobby Carpenter? Is Marion Barber?

AUTHOR: thelandryhat | IN: Cowboys | COMMENTS: 8 Comments |

The news out of Dallas is that defensive end Marcus Spears, who has underperformed since he was drafted in the first round three years ago, is not going to be traded. This is very interesting news because trade rumor mongers have invoked his name as much as any Cowboys player. He’s big. And he was expected to be a powerful force on the line. But quite honestly he has been a big disappointment. Thankfully, DeMarcus Ware has not been a disappointment.

Linebacker Bobby Carpenter is another player who has been discussed in trade rumors. He’s another underachiever. Coming from Ohio State’s championship team and championship defense, I think a lot of us expected him to be a great addition. He hasn’t really done squat. He may be traded to Miami so Bill Parcells can massage his skills. But what is he worth to them?

Which brings me to the most talked about player this offseason: Marion Barber. Still, the Cowboys have not signed him to a long-term contract. Still, the Cowboys have signed other restricted free agents while Barber waits. Still rumors are abound that Jerry Jones is going to trade up to draft Darren McFadden. What is going on? I keep asking this question because it’s a bit mindboggling that Barber is not secured on the Cowboys roster. There is less risk because of his restricted tag, but wouldn’t signing Barber to a 3 or 4 year deal excite the fans and players? He’s a motivating force on this team.

I fear this offseason and this upcoming draft. I firmly believe the Cowboys should keep those two first round picks and draft a cornerback and a wide receiver. With the second round pick, grab a running back. The rest of the picks should be split with offensive lineman and another wide receiver. This draft is packed with great running backs. Mike Hart, Ray Rice, Felix Jones, Steve Slaton all could be stars in the NFL. Moving up for Darren McFadden is an unnecessary move.

If Jerry Jones trades up for Darren McFadden I really think I will go legit insane with anger…and I am going to the Draft this year as I live in the area and am going start waiting around at 4am…… This will be the biggest mistake ever and I will seriously be filled with rage if he does this… Jerry Jones will be no better than that pathetic excuse for an owner Daniel Snyder if he trades up for McFadden… I dont even think he is the best back in the draft honestly… we all knew Adrian Peterson was going to be amazing… the kid was only 187 yards away from breaking the sooners all time single season rushing record 2 years ago and he missed 6 games!!!!!!!!!! we knew he was something special.. McFadden has the same build as Peterson (6′2 220ish) but has not, in my opinion, been as "oh my god" on the field in college, obviously he has had flashes of pure brilliance but people think just because Peterson did what he did all running backs his size will as well…honestly the class this year is SO DEEP, we can wait and draft even a Kevin Smith who is the same body type as Peterson and McFadden… seriously if he wastes these two draft picks and trades up I will be booing my face off at the Draft and verbally lashing out at Jerry Jones…. why get rid of Barber who has proved to be a serious force in the NFL and take a risk and 35 mil right off the bat on a guy who hasnt proved himself? Plus McFadden is a primadonna…we dont need any more drama on the Cowboys…even a guy like Mike Hart who is just straight up business only doesnt draw attention to himself off the field… we saw McFadden dressed up like a crazy person on Halloween?!? I am so against this if it happens, isnt there a way you can try and contact the Cowboys front office landryhat? Cant we sign a petition or something? … Honestly though word on the street is people are not thrilled with McFaddens tapes, we shall see how he does at combine, maybe he screws his chances up anyways and his stock goes down so Jerry Jones can get what he wants… Am I the only one who gets a minor heart attack with Jerry Jones here??!?

  2. If there is one thing I have learned from following the Cowboys during the Jerry Jones era is to expect the unexpected.  Recently the Cowboys have been fond of trading down in early rounds for more picks.  But now things have changed, the Cowboys are contenders and don’t appear to need many players but maybe one key player. I personally prefer Marion Barber over any player in the draft but Jerry maybe watching Adrian Petterson up in Minnesota and thinking the same thing could happen with Darren McFadden…   I hope not but I expect something unexpected.

whats everybody think about Jamaal Charles recent good performances in front of scouts and the possibility of him coming out sometime soon after Felix Jones in the draft and possibly available @Dallas’ pick in that round???

Guys,I would rather the boys get mendenhall or felix jones with their 22 pick altho i think both might be gone.  Then I would like to see them get a quality corner like DCR or Reggie Smith.  They can pick up a WR in free agency like Berrian who I think would be a great fit.  I hope we stay where we are at and draft smart.  And if we do trade up I hope it is only a few spots for Jones or Mendenhall.

Mike M: Personally, I think the Cowboys pick a running back before Charles comes up in the draft.

David: Come on…Berrian? We need young talent at wide receiver. Berrian is not a go-to guy. Terrell Owens has maybe 2-3 years left. We need a young guy to learn and fit right in once Terrell Owens retires because he won a Super Bowl with Dallas. I really think we need a wide receiver with one of those first two picks.

  6. david says:

Mike, I’m not saying we do not draft an Wr in this draft.  I just think its a deep position and its been proven you can find good Wr’s in the later rounds.  Also the boys are very high on Stanback.  Berrian would be a relatively low cost investment that has done pretty well with garbage at qb and I would bet you money will flurish in the right system.  He has the speed like Glenn to oepn it up for T.O. and Witten…Now if you address a stud corner in free agency then yes I’d say take a shot at a top WR.  But the boys are not going to spend big bank on a corner and there is no RB they need in free agency either.  I think their best scenario is go RB like Jones or Mendenhall and a CB like Reggie Smith or DCR…

  7. david says:

Mike, Check out Berrians stats.  And thats with a pathetic QB and offense.  Then try and visualize how he could be with ours and Romo…
