Miami Dolphins Trying to Reel in Marion Barber? Smells Fishy!

questionmark.jpgMiami Dolphins fans have invaded The Landry Hat ever since former Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells was named head of operations over there. Parcells is picking apart the Cowboys organization. He’s already pretty much wrapped up the Cowboys scouting director Jeff Ireland. Now he is looking to snag one of our assistant head coaches.

So what the hell is going on here? Certainly, Mr. Parcells plans to pay us back, right? We’re owed something, especially if he takes another person from the organization. Well, keep reading because this is going to get pretty interesting.

There’s been a lot of chatter about Miami trading its No. 1 pick in the draft. There’s been a lot of chatter in Dallas about drafting Arkansas junior Darren McFadden. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, an Arkansas alum, loves him. The Cowboys can’t do that without trading UP. The Cowboys have two first-round picks, including one from the Cleveland Browns, which currently looks to be about the 21st pick. The other pick will be the last pick in the draft because the Cowboys are going to win the Super Bowl.

This is where it gets crazy. Marion Barber is a restricted free agent. This means teams can bid on him but the Cowboys have seven days to match any offers. This could make for a war in the offseason, unless we sign him now. It is possible that he may be used as trade bait for this offseason and I was first to predict this scenario way back in early November.

Why else have the Cowboys stalled on signing Barber? Why would the Cowboys risk going into 2008, after a successful 2007, with a rookie running back and no one to back him up? It’s a given that free agent Julius Jones is not going to be in the Silver and Blue next year. So, you would think Barber would be quickly signed for three years, right? Not so fast. The Cowboys signed Romo, Ratliff and Crayton. Not Barber.

Is Barber going to be traded to Miami, along with one or both of the Cowboys first round picks, for that top pick? I think Miami would love nothing more than to give Ronnie Brown less carries, because he’s good. Bringing in Barber for 15 carries a game would give Miami a formidable force in the backfield. But does Barber want that? When Barber was asked earlier in the season about his limited playing time with Dallas, and JJ starting, he said he didn’t care as long as the team is winning. Fair enough. He’s a team player. He’s a winner.

But is he going to be a Dolphin?

The Pioneer Press reported last week that the Cowboys were going to sign Barber.

“Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III, 24, the former Gopher who needs 19 yards against Washington on Sunday to reach 1,000 for the season, can expect a new five-year contract in the $25 million range, including a signing bonus of about $10 million, before next season.”

Why didn’t this happen? I’m certainly curious. Time to call some sources.

Very interesting. Parcells is trying to clean Dallas out of all their talent. Cowboys getting McFadden too? That would be nuts.

That sure would be a high price for the Dolphins to go after Barber.

Lee, I think the Cowboys giving them Barber and the 22nd and 20th pick in the draft, plus the chief Cowboys scout is pretty damn fair. Maybe I am wrong.

I don’t see this Barber move happening.  One other thing you should note, Jerry Jones owes Wayne Huizenga a huge favor after last years offseason regarding the acquisition of Jason Garrett.  As far as I remember the Cowboys didn’t have to give up any compensation for him.

JD, we didn’t take him while the season was still running. And, Garrett is a Cowboy.

Understood but at the time he was a Dolphin and Wayne did not ask for any compensation and it looks like JJ didn’t either as this deal become official immediatley.

Sounds fishy to me. What sort of back deal bargains do the Fish and ‘boys have going that allows them to trade favors so easily? Sounds like illegal collusion to me. I say take away their draft picks!

McFadden isn’t as good as everyone seems to think. It’s not like he’s Adrian Peterson (the good one). Barber is a proven NFL performer. The Cowboys can get something for JJ ( a second round pick?) and take a good RB in the second or third round, or just give Tyson Thompson a shot. They should keep the two first round choices, or package one to move up enough to get a stud OL or DL.

Bigdog, I don’t disagree with you. I was merely throwing the possibility out there. It was reported MB3 was getting signed last week and it didn’t occur. So, it seems fishy that Parcells now takes over a team with the top pick, Jerry Jones has McFadden fever, and MB3 is unsigned. We can’t get anything for JJ, he is a free agent. We needed to trade him before the deadline. He’s good as gone unless we sign him. I personally think we can get a real decent back in the second or third rounds. A new offensive linesman would be great. We need a corner real bad and a wide receiver, but none are worth taking with the top pick. We may get Early Doucet with the mid first round pick we have if we don’t trade it. Tyson Thompson is horrible. We’ll see what happens.

Can we get a new SS please? is there anyone else out there who is fed up with RW? I mean he can’t even cover a TE man. I think we should look for someone at corner and at safety as RW is getting old and his speed is slowing…

    ThelandryHat Says:

Danegr, you make me think…..personally, RW is a fan favorite despite his questionable coverage. I think he could be traded at some point. I need to check his contract terms and see what he’s signed for. I don’t have a grasp on what the Cowboys lose if they trade a signed player. I know it’s tricky. I would not want Dallas to pick a SS early. I will do some mock drafts after the Cowboys win their sixth super bowl this year. Until then, hang tight and visit daily. I think some big news is about to come out of the Big D.

I was also reading about the marion barber III stuff going on. I don’t think thats a good thing. Like others were saying, McFadden is unproven and Marion has busted his butt for us, with a 5.0 ydpc avg. I don’t know why we would dump that, even for JJ favorite McFadden.  I agree with you, big things coming out of the Big D for sure man. I can’t wait for a full preseason  with our units again. I mean think about it y’all, we have had only 1 full preason with our starting unit and look how far we have gone and we are going to the Super!
